One way to jam Echelon and missile defence

A thinker | 10.05.2001 11:10

A simple system for jamming the Echelon eavesdropping systems at Menwith Hill and Flyingdales.

I've been thinking about a way that Echelon, the covert surveillance network operated at Menwith Hill and Flyingdales, and potentially Bush's proposed Star Wars system could be jammed.

Produce about 200 or more small jamming units. These units are electronically quite simple, pumping out radio signals on a wide range of frequencies. Attach a timer circuit to each unit which randomly turns it on for no longer than five seconds each time it operates.

Walk around the Flyingdales and Menwith Hill eavesdropping sites, using an appropriate cover such as hiking, and drop the units randomly around the place, hiding some of them where possible.

To track down each of the little devices would prove incredibly difficult and time consuming due to the short bursts when they are operational. However they would quite effectively block any eavesdropping due to the close proximity of the jammers swamping any potentially eavesdropped signals.

Thoughts?

Elementary my dear Thinker. I say, old chap, what a ruddy cunning plan.

Or an easier solution . . .

Radio jammers around Menwith hill?

Hmmm. . . Lateral thinking, I s'pose, but there are one or two problems:

1) Probably very illeagal (prob. punishable by death now)
2) Who'd make the units?
3) who'd distribute them?
4) Who'd pace them?
5) Wouldn't they have people watching around the base?
6) Or be able to find them by tracking the signal?
7) Not least, how long would the batteries last?

If you really wanted (And I'd like to make it very clear that I don't want or reccomend this) to 'jam' any eavesdropping system, I would suggest overloading it as being the best way. As far as I can figure out, they must use computers to search for 'keywords' (They're aren't enough people to listen/scan/read) all that communication).

So, I would guess that these 'keywords' include things like 'bomb, Allah, President, primeminister' etc.

So why not start a campaign to include these keywords on all e-mails & whatever? At least it would give 'em something to do, and they can't say anything about it!

Nonetheless, it smacks of Bolshevism to me, young man. Go and take a brisk walk, then join the army. Bloody pinko's.

A little hint, have a look at the flyingdales site, the small antenni that surround the builing are all of fixed or very similar length.

Remember certain em frequencies can only be propagated directionaly, so point your jamming gear in the right direction, add some frequency varience, and a little messing with the signal strength (illusion of moving objects, doplar shift)

flyingdales is part of the supply chain, break's anywhere in the supply chain, will reduce the efficiency of the end product, a well dug hole (oops there goes that optical link), of flying metalic kites in the way of comunications equipment (anywhere even a few miles away will render the comunication equipment, unable to report back to home)

think about your power supply and the life of your device, perhaps renewable energy, limiting operation of each device to only 20 mins per day

the cost of the devices, and the quantity required, could be prohibitive

breaking the communication links will be the cheapest option.

anyone remember that shell oil pipe line that mysteriously went underneath bnfl cappenhurst, and all posts marking it removed after the spy tower case?

;)

its a real shame that something of such global importance can not decided in a democratic way; with the mandate of the people, again whitehall 1, people 0

Metalstorm might shoot down missiles better than more missiles.
It could also be turned on those who lead the military industrial death machine.
Make an example of all those who seek power.
Start with jack straw and john stevens.A simple knife took care of apartheids vorster.

From this moment onwards, all my emails shall contain the word 'Hezbollah' to entertain the system! I might even change it every now and then to include such things as 'the london bomb' and even stretch as far as 'protester' !!!! God forbid - I can hear the screach of tyres already - help me!!!

Hello Echelon and GCHQ

Hello Echelon and GCHQ.

I assume you're reading this. If not here's a few short words to make sure:

Revolution, Hezbollah, Tony Blair, Asassination, Anti-capitalist, Taleban, Osama Bin Laden, Ak-47, Uzi, Bomb, Number 10, Plastic explosive, Real IRA...

Hah, hah. The irony of it, a 16 year old doing everything he can to get an MI5 file.

Try  http://www.echelon.wiretapped.net/original-release.html for the original media release. I don't remember an actual letter you were asked to forward on - rather you made up your own list of 50 or so words. The problem is that people ended up getting all kinds of crazy spam about drugs and guns and sutch. Doesn't bother me but some people objected
