Shoot to kill in Genoa

No more | 25.06.2001 13:11

BBC report indicates authorities are prepared to kill in Genoa

At the bottom of a BBC web page, it states that:

"Authorities in Genoa, where the G8 group of countries are meeting next month, have reportedly even ordered body bags and organised a mortuary in anticipation of violent clashes. "

This sounds like the police are prepared to fire upon and kill unarmed protestors in Genoa. They have already attempted to murder three activists in Gothenburg.

It is obvious that the authorities are planning violence, extra-judicial executions and any other fascistic move to detroy the anti-capitalist/anti-globalisation movement.

Like the vast majority of unarmed, peaceful civilians I am dead scared that the police will fit one of us with trumped up charges to silence us. OK, smashing windows is a criminal activity which one should expect to be charged for, regardless of how right the cause is. However, they are concerned less by the crime itself than the ideas behind it and the force used against us far outweighs the seriousness of any 'criminal activity' committed during demonstrations. By trying to maim people, regardless of whether this will kill someone, is horrendous and reminiscent of Nazism.

I was always under the impression that there was an element of freedom in Europe, despite the existence of capitalism. But I was wrong. We are now the targets of a Stasi-style European police network led by a collection of terrorist governments.

All we can do is go under-ground. For the first time, I am writing under pseudonyms and I just hope the police don't grab Indymedia's log-files.

bodybags

25.06.2001 13:39

So the bodybags are being ordered in anticipation of violent clashes?
what are the italian police planning?
protestors do not go to kill protests to kill police
protestors do not turn up with weapons
this is huge, ultimate confimation that a war is being waged on those of us who wish to change this militarybusiness world
just hope it doesn't put anyone off going!

your misgivings are justified

always assume, without descending into paranoia, that the intelligence services may be tapping in. dont use your home computer, dont use mobile phones, or any personal item with a 'chip'. dont allow too many links to build up.

They've declared war on democracy

25.06.2001 18:48

They've declared war on democracy by shooting unarmed protestors and planning to shoot hundreds more.

You'd have to be a fool to still believe that we're living in a free Europe anymore.

Going underground?

25.06.2001 22:00

So they order body bags. So they intimidate, harrass and do all the shit expected of them. So they know who I am? I got news. I know who they are. And there are more of us than there are of them. And we are smarter and more fluid. The only thing that should be going underground is capitalism...the underground of the grave;)

A poem

The G8 summit, a time when there morale will plummit
A time in prison I'll have to serve
because I actually had the nerve
to go against the system, politicians listen
there are more of us than there are of you
So what you going do

Don't be fooled by media scare stories

26.06.2001 02:45

I seem to remember the DC police ordering bodybags before A16. It's certainly a possibility that the Italian fascist police could turn Genoa into a massacre, just as it was a possibility that any one of these events could have ended in multiple fatalities on our side. But we should keep a cool head and not be scared by these types of stories, which I expect was the effect ordering a load of bodybags was intended to produce.

A few thoughts on "going underground"

26.06.2001 03:07

Basic security is essential for everyone, i.e. using PGP, having a decent firewall, shredding paper documents, being careful what you say on the phone...

But going totally underground (i.e. burning off your fingerprints, using false identities, faking your own death etc), isn't really an option for most of us who like to live relatively normal lives. If you wanna do it, good luck to you but excuse the rest of us who aren't quite as brave.

We're not living in a fascist police state yet - it'll probably take another 10-15 years of neoliberalism to produce that kind of society. Of course, when that does happen then the role of revolutionaries becomes quite different. Forget trying to make some kind of point, your job is to stay alive, and if possible, engage in clandestine acts of sabotage against the system.

This is not to say I don't support underground activists like the ELF/ALF - on the contrary, I think they do a lot of good work and I hope they keep it up. But donning a balaclava and torching a building by moonlight is a job only for the most exceptionally brave and dedicated freedom fighters, and there is still a lot of productive overground stuff we can do because despite the forces of fascism tightening their grip, they don't have us by the neck just yet. Peace.

War on Democracy

Shooting activists in Gothenburg was a precedent, you can see where they are going with this. Are you prepared to martyr yourself for truth? Do you have a choice?

'Intelligence' is watching now!

26.06.2001 19:33

I've absolutely no doubt that the UK 'intelligence' services have files on me, even though I have never been arrested, charged, tried or convicted on any crime. In fact, my only crime is an opinion - I'm not even a window smasher! But I think it's pretty hilarious that these half-wit morons (probably Oxbridge types with spotty arses and floppy hair, or macho policemen with small cocks playing James Bond) are so fucking scared of opinions!

No doubt they'll stitch me or some other poor sod up on trumped up charges, but they are the criminals, they are the fascist pigs and jerks who perpetuate a system of injustice, poverty and murder. I don't care if they chase me to my death, but just like the millions of anti-capitalists around the world, they won't break my spirit and they won't convince me I'm wrong. I certainly don't give a flying fuck if they know my name. Like Gandhi, Mandela and the other millions of people who have resisted oppression, I will stand by my words. And that's all I have - words. No bombs, guns, knives, bricks, batons, tanks, CS gas, etc. If they kill me because of my words, then I can only be right.

There can be no under-ground resistance or pseudonyms. Clandestine groups tend towards secret hierarchies, are out-of-touch and inherently violent for violence's sake. We've got something better than the violent and corrupt system that oppresses us - truth, dignity, democracy and justice. And that's all we need to guide us.

However, I think we need to form support networks so that when we are arrested on false charges - or whatever - someone knows about it. Is there something like this in existencen or should we start one up?

Fear is their weapon

27.06.2001 10:58

Talk of body bags by police is just a fear tactic..dont worry it will be all Ok..the revolution will come and everyone including the police will be happy and one day soon we will all sit around and laugh at the atrocities created in the name of progress!

Death by crushing

17.07.2001 00:14

Or another possibility.... Genoa is a city of many extremely narrow windy streets. Say the crowd does breach the red zone and there is a stampede. At both Heysel and Hillsborogh (sp?) not to mention a recent football game in I think Zimbabwe or SA, we have all seen how many deaths can result from a massive surge by a large crowd of people.

So although it is possible the "Italian Fascist POlice" are planning to execute demonstrators in cold blood, just remember when you have upto 150,000 people in what could be a confrontational demonstration, there are other ways to die apart from lead poisoning care of the Old Bill.

Of course, I am sure most people all hope that no-one is badly hurt let alone killed in Genoa -- and talking about body bags in the press IS a Police scare tactic I agree -- but perhaps it is better the authorities were prepared for this unpleasant eventuality than to have

"protesters bodies were found trussed up in dustbin bags and piled in back street...'we never thought we'd need body bags or a morgue,' said Captain Coprelli of the Carabinieri Special Forces.'" type stories.
