on tactics

After Seattle, Quebec, Prague, Göteborg and Genoa the discussion violence vs. non-violence continues and seems far from being resolved.

and your point is?

???????????

Perhaps his point is that despite the wonders of the IMC software, it is not ideal for carrying discussions. The general idea is that discussion takes place on IRC - not a place many want to go, it would seem, judging by the general silence there.

Replying here is not easy and can become invisible quite quickly if you don't keep track of which articles you're replying too - there's also a bug in the software that sometimes looses posts for some unaccountable reason - this can also put people off if they don't compose their stuff offline first...

But yes - discussion is vital and is going on continuously at the moment in literally hundreds of groups and email lists - most of it is hot air...

re indymedia

it's true the site /s is not a good place for discussion - it's ok for sporadic or current quick debate but not for ongoing developing discussion - it all gets lost.

better places exist for discussion as has been mentioned the many email lists and forums etc that are DESIGNED for discussion

although being able to see a list of all articles in order of number of comments would be good

Stop complaining

This is a great site. IMC are doing fantastic work. but sometimes I read the comments and it just makes me want to get a big company and make you all work for me on low wages. Then all you would have to whine about is the length of your tea breaks.

Re: And your point is????????????

My point was that there is no point in just putting up a posting complaining there is no debate. Surely better to start one!

?????????????

a points been made!

11.08.2001 11:23

I think that my complaint has obviously provided a discussion of sorts........ Indymedia is fantastic--yes, however the point being, check out other indy sites melbourne etc. and the common or garden people are actually contributing not just articles in their own right but comprhensive discussion on top. Other forums exist i know yet indymedia is such an open thing that many who do not want to sign up to lists due to the 'hot air' find that indymedia is usually the best uptodate thing. Unfortunately the UK site has little discussion, apathy on the part of us I beleive.--???????????

tactics

Long live IMC.I reckon a word-button that'd link you to ongoing debate about tactics would be great it would be on the left hand side of the main page from there you could
select which tactical area you wished to discuss
eg. police tactics on the big demos like Genoa
police tactics on the smaller ones like local maydays
or anti-fascist ones
police tactics on arresting people for illegal
activities such as subversive stuff, hash etc.
police older tactics on revolutionary groups

People tactics to counter the ones above individually in
seperate debates.
All im doing is suggesting I remember a fucking really good
debate on the whole Free Easton thing.I believe its very
plausible to get serious tactical training done here on
imc
one thing i worry about is this crazy fixation with these big demos which have shot us into public minds as an alternative. We must define ourselves on our terms and stop calling and explaining things using 'against','anti' etc.
we now need the public we need to offer somethig positive
and spiritual which is one thing that this rickety old authority system cannot offer. We have far more creative forces on our side .Solidarity and Unity.
