Tony Blair's silence on the Genoa Violence

net activist | 09.08.2001 20:37

Tony Blair has still refused to condemn the Italian Govt and the actions of the Italian Police over the Human Rights violations and atrocities commited in Genoa.

Now that the Italy's chief of Police has admitted
that the police used 'excessive force in trying
to bring demonstrators under control' [1]

Isn't it about time that Tony Blair made an official
statement of condemnation towards the the way Police
tactics in Genoa?

When the violent first erupted, he was actually
supportive, if not congradulatory towards the Police
actions. Now that there is widespread international
condemnation for the events, he has fallen back on
complacent silence.

Put pressure on the UK Govt. to make an official
statement of condemnation, and let them know that
widespread human rights abuses and the criminalisation
of dissent will not be tolerated by UK citizens.

Write to your MP and tell them that the complacent
silence on the part of this Govt. with regards to
the widespread human rights abuses and police terrorism
and violence in Italy is unacceptable:

Also, write to the media and complain about the same:

blair et als silence

why should blair be expected to make any further comment on the violence? not unless he has to fake some concern eventually. The G8 'leaders' are so confident that they have a docile and quiescent majority population behind them that they are quite confident that they can create the most horrendous scenes and not even pass comment on them beyond condemning hooligans and thugs aand introducing ever more repressive control measures as an outcome.bradord and genoa - hot on the heels of each other - different scale - one local, one global - same agenda - similar expected outcomes.creating civil disorder to produce further suppression. contol! control! control!

Why on earth would we want blair to speak out against the violence? So that he can pull off yet another smarmy PR stunt? Most people realise he was all for the violence, not enough of it in his opinion. This is far more honest than we usually expect from that twat, let's make the most of it.

Open letter to MP - FWIW!!

I'm not sure quite why I bother anymore but if anyone can make use of this please jump on the wagon...

Dear Ms. Armstrong,

We have been following British Govt ‘statements’ vis-a-vis the aftermath of the G8 fiasco in Italy and have been forced to the most alarming conclusion that our present government not only does not actually care about the rule of law but through it’s extraordinary silence on the matter, (when all other western governments except of course the rogue US, are making vociferous demands for justice and are calling for international enquiry into why fascist paramilitaries were let loose in the bona-fide Genoa Social Forum premises to enact a mini-Kristalnacht) also demonstrates a total lack of compassion on the part of your leadership - perhaps this abysmal lack is at the basis of why your much flouted ‘Third Way’ is failing - you failed to take humanity into account.

Although we no longer claim any affiliation with ANY political party in Britain since Labour become the new right wing govt in this country, the sample article enclosed below (one amongst some 5000 similar articles from various groups going around the net right now) clearly demonstrates the seeds of your pending downfall if you don’t start taking far more _genuine_ interest in the well-being of the generality on this benighted planet.

Representing big business to the exclusion of your electorate’s needs and requirements is a travesty of true government - to be held in nothing but contempt.

Yours very sincerely,

(article sent was the Workers World one just posted here :)

Don't bother

10.08.2001 14:19

Writing to your MP is like farting in the wind. What's the point? Even if they agree with you (highly unlikely), there's nothing they can do about the Blair government's arrogance, big business leanings and hawkish tendancies. Why is anyone bothered by what he says anyway? Just ignore him and shoot his corporate cronies.

Actually he HAS commented on it

10.08.2001 16:50

and he was fully in favour of the police, as we know. leave the self righteous little #### to tie himself up in his own words. anyway, if the foot n mouth enquiries go aginst him, he may vanish from the scene more quickly that you think

You'll be pleased to know...

11.08.2001 14:32

...that I've forwarded this whole page to my local MP.
I would urge everyone else to do the same. It's so important that they hear our views. Even if you think they're not worth writing to, it's even important that they know that you don't think they're worth writing to. Instead of condemning them for being "out of touch", let's do something about it. It won't solve all the world's problems but it'll be a step in the right direction.

Also, some MPs (although NONE of them are currently in the cabinet) are actually quite (relatively speaking at least) left wing and they feel intimidated by the prevailing right wing orthodoxy in parliament and by the Party whips (WHIPS for fuck's sake, it's an outrage that whips even exist!). If they know that they have local voters behind them then they will feel more confident to stand up for their left wing principles. So do fax or email or write to your MPs everyone and urge them to get active in parliament on the issues that matter to you.

Go on, don't be a pessimist, WRITE! It won't save the world but it's a hell of a lot better than nothing. And then, next time Clare Short tries to denounce us for protesting on the street where the whole world can see us instead of lobbying our 'democratic' institutions, we can righteously point out that we're doing both.

So click on the above link and visit the FaxYourMP website.

Also, I don't know why they've labelled it .com, it's not profit making.

Go on, write. I've done it, now it's your turn.

Send them this page or something else off indymedia or write them a letter or a quick note or whatever. Vent your anger on them, but be logical and eloquent.
