Drums | 10.09.2001 09:08 | Fiesta for Life | Anti-militarism

On Saturday 8th around 25 people with a small samba band met in Canning Town to raise awareness about DSEi arms fair and the protest. Leaflets were given out and many locals gave a friendly welcome. The group marched through local estates and around the exhibition centre, and were heavily photographed by police, who followed with 2 vans and blocked access to DLR stations.

Campaign against DSEi now

Below is a long list of email addresses that you can use right now to spread the word about the DSEi and the accompanying protests. You need to write politely and courteously, and if possible, use the most serious looking email address you can:

 someone.important@bigcompany.com

...looks better than

 red_rage@smashthestate.net

Try to include the following points below:

---------------------

1.) The Ministry of Defence are attempting to sell weapons to countries with very bad human rights records, such as India, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Kuwait, China etc.

2.) Apart from the direct issue of Human Rights, most of these countries, especially South Africa, will be getting into even more debt than they are already in

3.) They are inviting representatives from countries who are at war with eachother in one form or another, examples include Angola and Uganda, India and Pakistan, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt as well as Israeli representatives.

4.) Despite the fact that the police are gearing up for protests that are expected to be similar scale to the Mayday ones, there has been hardly any mention of demonstrations or the actual conference in the press.

---------------------

Emailing individual emails seperately looks a bit better than having thousands of emails in the 'cc' bit. This doesn't take so long to do - just get used to cutting and pasting the same text into a seperate email for each recipient.

This is the 21st century and there is no place for the arms trade - profiting from death and misery like this should be illegal throughout the world - it is more blatant than trafficking heroin or smack.

Email the media demanding more coverage of something that clearly has more importance than it is given, citing the nature of the countries who are invited.

Email UK embassies around the world demanding a moral explanation as to why UK is selling weapons to corrupt governments who should be spending their money on infrastructure and development.

Email the police demanding they respect the right to protest at this abominable trade and also warn of the possibility of illegal weapons being touted this year as was the case last year.

Finally, email the organisers of the conference themselves - make sure their inbox's are flooded not with insults but legitimate inquiries into their moral position.

....try to make it to the protest if you can:
