happy to help, but can I add...?
20.09.2001 23:04
I'd like to add that I'm quite puzzled, though: the virus that affected the server in the last 2 days must have been Nimda, which only attacks the ever-present security flaws in Windows NT and 2000 servers, and Microsoft Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.
why (oh why) an anti-establishment publisher like ZNET would decide to use Micro$oft solutions I really don't know.
was the service offered for free? if so, is it that difficult to find someone ready to offer them a UNIX/LINUX environment? especially given that it's free and it's open source?

Apparently the data was recovered.

good news from zmag.org

ZNet Is Back
The multifaceted catastrophe threatening ZNet content has been averted. People should update their Norton and other Virus Protection programs. This virus is still present all over the internet, but does not damage content.
Speed will be low for awhile due to fine-tuning new equipment and upgrading many components as well as heavy usage. Some interactive features such as forums, forms, uploading, etc., will are disabled for now. We will go off line at night for a time...but not long. Try again if you have trouble.
We have removed graphics and considerable top page content to lower server burden...
