Martin 'O'Hagan rip

30.09.2001 21:24

Martin O Hagan, sunday world journalist asassinated in Lurgan, Martin 'O'Hagan rip St Martin pray for him. Martin 'O'Hagan was shot dead in Lurgan last night, by loyalist junta covert state forces connected to the UFF/UDA and LVF. Martin 'O'Hagan was a down to earth, working class, gentleman, a man of integrity, impartiality, and as courageous in life as he was in death. Martin 'O'Hagan was also a Trade unionist and an exposer of both state and paramilitary injustice and corruption. My sympathies to Martin's family, his wife and 3 daughters. i met Martin 'O' Hagan in 1999, when i had no where to turn to and was literally at my wits end. as an community activist and a unemployed housewife, my troubles both financial and emotional started when i had decided off my own volition to join a course recommended by Gingerbread at a supposedly government endorsed private trainin organisation, it was the start of the government's introduction of the new deal scheme, and we newly recruited 10 wimin, as single parents were amongst one of the first guinea pigs of the new deal scheme, at least that was the state's excuse. This trainin scheme which was run by a private trainin organisation who were awarded £250,000 by the government to train 10 wimin over a 9 month period, supposedly we wud be getting the very best of tuition and tutorin at over £10,00 a head. The private trainin organisation in question were already supposedly trainin disabled and young people wif learning difficulties, those most vunerable in the community, obviously this sounds too good to be true and it was. At my time at this trainin organisation i witnessed young disabled people from both sides of the community being treated appalingly, sent to the shops to buy ciggies and generally treated as dogsbodies, our tutor who was also the tutor of the mentally and physically disabled young people wud spend her time slaggin off these vunerable young people and disclosing to us their private and personal family histories, she must of thought of us as confidantes, that we wud be able to laugh and be amused at the difficulties and handicaps of the young people under her supervision. Her attitude was both sickening and unprofessional. it got so bad that the chairperson of Gingerbread who was one of the wimin on this course wif us complained about the treatment of these young people. Things went from bad to worse from here onwards and those of us who complained about the inadequate non existant tutoring and the lack of facilities found that we were singled out for speacial treatment ie our benefits were stopped. The chairperson of Gingerbread who was a middle aged lady was asked by our tutor to clean the toilets. My benefits were stopped for no reason other than i may hav been identified as an agitator and an activist. At my wits end I contacted Martin 'O'Hagan who on my behalf contacted the DHSS to enquire as to why my benefits had stopped, and also wrote an article about how i had enroled on the mickey mouse new deal scheme to gain a worthwhile teaching qualification only to find myself living on air at Christmas. I know if I had told Martin the whole story about wat was going on at this private trainin organisation, he wud hav been more than interested in my story and wud hav published it no matter wat the consequences , but i wanted the qualification badly after all i and the other wimin had been through, and i didnt tell him the whole story which i regret, 10 more wimin were recruited after we eventually finished at the trainin organisation only to suffer the same as we had previously, the trainin organisation was eventually closed down in 2000. So for Martin 'O' Hagan a tireless and impartial campaginer for the people, you are always remembered and your concern for ordinary people sufferin in difficult times is appreciated. I met Martin last year in the street and he asked me how i was and did i get sorted out, thats how caring and kind he was, rip Martin 'O'Hagan.
