Bombing Afghanistan - First War Crime Already

type3 | 07.10.2001 17:17

just as the bombing of kabul started the first war crime has already been committed

It seems that all electricity in kabul has been lost, military action that attacks civilian infrastructure such as this breaks the geneva convention. so within minutes of "the war on terrorism" starting a prescident has been established. as well as this it seems the citys airport may have been bombed.

we have to get out and show our oppostion. monday at 7pm, trafaglar sq.?

The BBC, New York Times and Reuters have reported that electricity in Kabul is back on (7:30 GMT).
To me this suggests that it was turned off by the Taliban upon initial UK/USA strikes and thus is not a war crime.

Secondly, British and American officials have stated that there will be no civilian targets such as bridges or power supplies. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean civilians won't be accidentaly hit by air strikes.

For that reason and, more importantly to me as an American, because these strikes will just trigger additional attacks against America, I am upset that the US has chosen this particular military response. I think it has its merits (in destabilizing the Taliban and al-Qaeda) but its dangers (to both Afghanis and Americans and its allies) outweigh these functions. Something needs to be done to prevent further attacks upon America and its allies--and regretably it seems that force might be necessary to some degree in some areas--but I don't think these particular bombings are the right way. In addition to their immediate destruction, the bombs strike such an emotional response (among both those in favor and against) that I'm afraid they'll be counterproductive.

To a War Criminal

07.10.2001 21:09

Tony Blair, your war is a spurious “just” cause. Without a shred of credible evidence, you have condemned an entire Nation to disaster. The circumstantial (fabricated) evidence has not even been presented to any legitimate court and a defendant is innocent until and unless, proven guilty. So this an act of unbridled terror.

Sir Bernard Ingram thinks you are a very good actor, but I think your act of playing God, imposing your demonic vision of a New World Order on the entire Earth is blasphemous. You have degraded all UK citizens by dragging us into your deranged conflict, you cannot pursue peace, by war! You have now jeopardised us all, by making us targets for reprisals from Muslims who have NEVER attacked our country.

You wish to save Afghan people from oppression by a regime the USA created and funded, by killing them. But you have served your Overlords well and no doubt will get the Knighthood you seek, enjoy it, because you will get your recompense, your name has already been erased from the Book of Life, and you are destined to smoulder in Hell’s fire....eternally.

You said Britain has no choice but to engage in this annihilation of a broken Nation, (for oil and opium) I say we do....you can choose life, or death, you have chosen death for our servicemen and women, and innocent starving, defenceless people. May God have mercy on your damned soul.

Don't believe what you're told

I would take any information about targets hit, people killed, electricity on or off etc with a huge pinch of salt.
There are no independant journalists in Kabul. BBC don't have any, Reuters don't have any, CNN don't have any. The briefings come straight from the military, and are therefore wholly suspect. Don't expect the military to tell us what is *really* happening -- Why should they? Their job is to tell us whatever is best for the "war effort". We call this propaganda. I don't trust the Taliban to tell the truth about the war, nor do I expect the allies to tell the truth. The first casualty of war is truth.

In the Gulf War, we had film of the destroyed bomb shelter in Baghdad. In Kosovo we saw film of bombed buses full of civilians (we also saw doctored film of this incident from the US military, which they later admitted doctoring). We won't see any film like that this time. Remember, both these events were *denied* by the military, and were later proved to be true by independent media sources.
There are no independent media sources in Afghanistan.

Don't believe the hype. They military can tell us anything we like. We cannot refute it, and lazy corporate journalists will print it without comment.
