Response from Hackney council to property sell-offs

Ivan Agenda | 15.10.2001 11:12

Below is a response from Hackney council, after the property consultants Nelson Bakewells head offices were occupied on Friday in protest at the 'property disposal programme', which is to see many community assets sold off.

The Housing Department has been reviewing its land and site holding as part of the corporate commitment to address the budgetary crisis facing the authority.

Inevitably this entails officers examining all options, and various lists will have been drawn up for internal consideration during this process. However, Housing & Environmental Services Committee did agree to declare as surplus a number of sites at its meeting on 10 September to enable detailed consultation to take place with local residents.
The vast majority of sites agreed by Members earlier this week are small parcels of land which form part of existing estates or are blocks of garages that will require careful and detailed consultation. The report recognised this and Members endorsed the approach. Housing associations are likely to play a key role in taking this programme forward.

The programme of disposals is not simply about generating finance to address the Council's financial position, which we must do, but to procure the development of much needed housing accommodation in the borough. It is worth noting that in less than 4 years, the authority's direct or indirect allocations has reduced from 4,000 per annum to below 2,000. The Council currently has 2,000 families placed in temporary accommodation. In addition, this programme of sales will generate investment in housing estates, where land is being sold, to complement, supplement or replace the Council's own Capital Housing programme resources through Section 106 planning agreements.

If, prior to or during the auction, any of the sites are illegally occupied, appropriate measures will be taken to restore order. The Police are monitoring the situation.

HACKNEY SELL-OFF RESPONSE

15.10.2001 18:40

The continuing decline of social housing brought about under the shameful activities of the current Labour government will result in its inevitable downfall.

The UK will not imitate the US by allowing its social communities to fall apart without using the peaceful aid of direct action.

Solidarity and conscience will drive people to continue this campaign despite your empty threats and token gestures.

This is the end of the line for corrupt councillors who have entered the political fray to take advantage of poor planning laws, disregard employees and local people whilst abusing taxpayers money.

Considered response!

Hackney Fightback - Don't do it!

For the non- SWP/Socialist Party, non party, community based, direct action focussed group, you know it makes far better sense to be involved with Hackney not 4 sale! hackneynot4sale@yahoo.com 07950 539254

Part of the problem ... or part of ...

26.10.2001 00:26

For the non-middle class know it all SWP/Anarcho, not hiding behind words like "non party", community based, and including direct action , you know it makes far better sense to contact the local UNISON office and get involved with the local authority workers campaign of the last 9-10 months or get your own thing going on your local estate rather than scoring cheap sectarian points about who's a "trot" and whos not.

now back to the struggle in hackney ..........

Residents get in the way.....

26.10.2001 21:57

Why is this same bankrupt council obsessed with the spending of over £1 million, £600 000 coming from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, meant for improvements in services for the people of Hackney, to raise standards in education, employment, housing, education, and crime reduction, when it has a duty to its residents to support vital services such as law centres, nurseries, youth projects, playgrounds and ethnic minority support groups which are closing or under threat due to lack of funds, as a result of the Council's total lack of competence in managing its finances? To the ruling group of Councillors in Hackney, the residents, the majority of whom are opposed to this gross misuse of such funds, are just something that gets in the way. This project was steered through secret Local Strategic Partnership meetings and a committee where most established residents' groups both locally and across the borough were excluded from any input. It involves the destruction of Grade 11 listed structures, trees and the civic gardens.
