McDonalds and the war

McDonalds gives helping hand in food drops

Embargoed: 27 October 2001; 1200 hrs

Press release: McDonalds gives helping hand in food drops

AMERICA'S LEADING CATERING COMPANY, MCDONALDS, SPONSORS THE FOOD DROP ON AFGHANISTAN, IN ORDER TO RELIEVE THE PLIGHT OF STARVING AFGHANI CIVILIANS.

McDonalds has 300 tons of dehydrated meat and 600 tons of long-life bread lined up to feed the hungry of Afghanistan. As part of our commitment to helping those in need, we are bolstering the government's food drop effort, which has already seen many starving Afghanis fed in the humanitarian effort coinciding with the war on terrorism.

International sales director, Ed Gladman, said: 'We have raised literally millions of dollars for the relief workers and the bereaved families of those killed in the terrorist attacks. Now we think we owe it to those in Afghanistan, who have suffered because of the ongoing drought. We believe that McDonalds should represent the compassion and freedom of America and it is our moral duty as a caterer to help feed the thousands of Afghanis, to show that they are not our enemy and to give them a taste of America.'

McDonalds has moved the food aid to an airforce base in Nebraska where it will be taken to Tashkent before being delivered as part of the food drop undertaken by the USAF.

This should make 'em die off

27.10.2001 23:53

This is great. Bomb their existing stocks of maybe sustaining food in Red Cross warehouses twice. Frighten off the truck drivers so food cant get in to the country - like war criminal Clare Short says - No Pause - then drop burgers and fries in to the minefields - so that those who mahage to get these cold offerings in polystyrene boxes can either get addicted to the flavourings, or more likely, in their starved conditions contract fatal sickness and diarrhoea, the non-fatal reaction to this stuff in the healthy person

How more stupid can Americans get?

28.10.2001 03:14

Are the men running the military efforts in Afghanistan so blind to the thoughts and feelings of the people they claim to be liberating that they would drop McDonalds food (by)products on the Afghan people when what they want is to preserve their culture in the face of American economic imperalism, meaning no McDonalds?

Yes, apparently.

Tom

proof

28.10.2001 08:11

this is conclusive proof of the west forcing markets open, in this instance by starving people, then forcing them to eat sub-tripe "food", with little nutritional value and less taste.
or are mcdonalds not going to drop their own food? the report didnt make that much clear.

blah

Stop and think

28.10.2001 15:18

Hold on a minute. Yes McDonalds sells tripe. Yes McDonalds is known as an exploitative dominator of the catering industry. Yes, I don't like McDonalds either. But surely any food dropped into Afghanistan - presuming it reaches the people who need it - is a good thing at the moment. Its all well and good to condemn and condemn, but at least this is a positive move. There's no point whatsoever in criticising everything that people like McDonalds - or event the government - simply because they are who they are. I'm sure that the people here criticising the move are doing far less to help the Afghan people themselves. Thankyou.

A wind up

28.10.2001 21:26

I think this whole story is a wind up !!
Where's the proof ?
No link to the Mac shit site, surely they would be stuffing the propagander down our throats.
A press release with no contact details to follow it up !!
And if you do check out Mac shite there is no mention of this action. But they do mention lots of other wonderfull things they have done since Sept 11th.
Give us the full storey and its back up or peddle your shite to the Daily Mail !!

Sir Honest

We shouldn't be reactionary

29.10.2001 13:46

Sir Honest is right, there is little evidence to suggest this is a genuine McDonalds press release and I've not seen any stories in the media. Surely any food aid would be channelled through the appropriate relief agencies? And if the company is giving such donations, it would hardly be dealing with the USAF. How come McDonalds has such huge amounts of dehydrated meat? Why would it stockpile 'dehydrated meat' when all its meat is in the form of frozen burgers? Is the meat halal? If not, then it would be a stupid to drop tons of it on a Muslim nation - although, knowing the US, maybe it's not unrealistic. Are the food drops actually from planes in Uzbekistan or from the aircraft carriers in the Arabian Sea?

I'm afraid that the more I look at this article, the more dubious it becomes. Those who have responded to it with abhorrence look pretty stupid. Don't believe everything you read.

But it does sound funny - McWar, Big McLaden, etc.

Peace and Justice with fries

31.10.2001 16:56

When McTony was bombing McYugoslavia over the McKosovo issue, he went on McCNN to tell us that the conflict was all about "peace and justice". This was indeed a historic war - the first ever armed conflict fought between two powers that both had McDonald's branches on their territories (thus putting an end to the "Golden Arches" theory of international relations, which stipulated that no two "McDonald's" countries would ever go to war with one another).

Happily enough, all the Yugoslav branches of McD's were trashed by Serb nationalist rioters . . . regrettably, there are no Western fast-food joints to blow up or burn down in Kabul, but when the first franchise opens, I'm sure the Black Bloc won't be far behind. (And yes, this story is a plant!)

Not From McDaonalds

03.11.2001 22:38

I got in touch with Mcdonalds to double-check the press release had originated from them. According to them, it didn't. Their reply:

You contacted us regarding a press release from the IMC earlier asking if this was posted by us. I can confirm with you that this is NOT the case. This release has nothing to do with McDonald's and does not originate from us.

Thank you for checking this directly with us.
