Open Letter to all GR members regarding Brussels Bus

Finghín Kelly | 28.11.2001 20:09

Open letter to all Globalise Resistance members regarding the actions of GR leadership over Socialist Youth bus to Brussels

To: Globalise Resistance and members of Globalise Resistance

Dear Friend,

We are writing to formally register our dismay at your decision to advertise travel to the demonstration in Brussels by Ryan Air flights without even a mention of the bus organised by Socialist Youth & the Socialist Party despite details being sent in by at least four people. We are members of Globalise Resistance and have played a role in building for GR events and recently have worked with activists from GR on many anti-war activities. At a recent meeting when it became clear that GR was not in a position to organise a bus to Brussels we made a formal offer to GR members to travel to Brussels with us on a bus, which we are actually subsidising.

The approach of Socialist Youth / Socialist Party, which was explained to Richard Boyd Barrett, who is a leading member of the SWP and active in GR, was that we would send some people on the GR bus to Brussels but that we needed to organise a special bus that would stay in Brussels for an extra day because Socialist Youth is participating in an International Socialist Resistance "Counter Summit" on the Saturday. When the offer of spaces on our bus was made Grace Lally of Globalise Resistance / SWP advocated that the bus be a joint bus as many members of Globalise Resistance would have a difficulty travelling on a 'Socialist' labelled bus. We understand that our approach is now being labelled as sectarian and that some people may even believe that we sabotaged GR attempts to organise a bus.

We find it incredible to be labelled in this way given that our offer represented a genuine and generous offer of assistance to GR. It is not sectarian, it is the right of Socialist Youth to organise a "Socialist" bus to a socialist conference. It strikes us that some people in GR are unfortunately trying to put a measure of blame on us for an unfortunate own lack of focus and preparation for the events in Brussels within GR itself.

We find it deeply ironic and disturbing that a group opposed to Globalisation and rampant free market capitalism consciously choose to advertise and actively encourage people to travel to an event like this on the most exploitative, non union, anti worker airline in this country, when there was an alternative i.e. a bus organised by socialists. Some members of GR may have some difficulty travelling on our "Socialist" bus but we believe that many more members of GR would have an even greater problem travelling with Ryan Air. The issue of the bus being a joint bus is a red herring. The key point is that, the genuine offer of co-operation from Socialist Youth was spurned on a very spurious political basis. We would like to know when and who made the decision to advertise Ryan Air and ignore our offer.

With regard to the approach to organise a joint bus, while we said that we would welcome and encourage anyone from GR to travel on our bus, we did explain that our bus had been organised for several weeks and that there were only around ten places left, which GR members were welcome to book.

The work that all of us are involved in is far too important to be cut across by such pettiness. I would now ask you to finally advertise the details of our bus.

Yours comradely,

Susan Fitzgerald
Socialist Youth / Socialist Party

The Dublin Bus

Having just come back from an SWP backed meeting down in Dublin I am somewhat confused by the lack of understanding between the two groups- or is it three separate arguement.
I am not a member of GR but when I was asking about goiing to Brussels I was told by SWP members that the bus was going to Brussels was being organised by the SP. They didn't indicate at this time (about a week ago) that there was any problem with this and I presumed they were pushing people to via this method as much as any other. There was no mention of a flight to me.

Doops

This is what globaliseresistance website says

They list loads of options - don't know if any of them is yours. As to flying with ryan air - they're certainly the cheapest and the other day were offering flights at 3.99 each to and back - they may be scummy operators but some folk could save over 25 quid flying with them.

Travel info below from GR website at:
 http://www.resist.org.uk/brusselstransport.html

Just get there that's what I say! What's far worse I think is that they don't mention the street parties and actions planned for saturday the 15th in brussels:

"* The 15th of December : Streetparty with sound system and loudspeakers, rally around the theme mobility : Action theatre, music and performaces throughout the city. A celebratory march that will progress towards the site of the final concert.

* The 15th of December, after the Street Party : a great free concert to close the festivities in happyness and good faith. An alternative use for public space is a coming-together to party without musical prejudice and rigid rules. The diverse origins of the music will mingle during this concert, where jams are encouraged and the word fusion should take on several meanings."

Clarification re: Brussels bus

01.12.2001 23:35

The only bus from Ireland that is going to the demo is the one being organised by the SP and SY. All are welcome to come with us regardless of which group/party you're in or not in.
Most SWP members have no problem with this, it is their leadership (which is also the leadership of GR) have a major problem with it. The leadership of GR are tellig people to travel Ryanair and to 'meet up over there'. They have not mentioned the bus we are organising despite us being affiliated to GR and despite us offering full co-operation with them and offering places on the bus.
Please don't be put off by all this crap from the SWP/GR leadership, if you want to come to Brussels please feel free to book with us, details are on our websites.
I think the last contributer may have thought that the original posting was about Brussels plans in England (We really need a Irish IMC site!) The original posting is about the Irish bus to Brussels
