Declaration of the Argentine Left

Chris Edwards | 24.12.2001 12:37

Buenos Aires, December 22, 2001 Declaration

Yesterday, Saturday 21, the PO, Izquierda Unida (United Left) and
other left organizations, met in front of the National Congress in
order to express their repudiation of the meeting of the Legislative
Assembly, which tries to continue the policy of the IMF under other
forms and by means of new political figures.

The left organizations taking part in the meeting issued the
following document stating their common interpretation of the present
political situation and the tasks to be carried out in order to
overcome it:

DECLARATION

The Popular Uprising Ended With De la Rua and Cavallo

We Don't Want More of the Same

The people and workers of Argentina brought down the government of De
la R*a and Cavallo by taking to the streets. This is gigantic popular
victory, facing a crisis which resulted in the cutting of wages, the
freezing of the people' s savings and the generalized bankruptcy of
the public finances. The De la R*a and Cavallo, the Menem and
Duhalde, the Ruckauf, Puerta and Rodr*guez Sa* are responsible for
the social catastrophe and for the social and the economic
disorganization which are destroying the lives of millions of
Argentineans. The parties controlling the Legislative Assembly are
also responsible for this disaster. They have neither authority nor
capacity for forming a new government, and still less for carrying
out the final phase of the Cavallo plan.

It is against this that the people rebelled, taking to the streets,
blocking roads, occupying workplaces, and assaulting the centers of
power. Precisely because of that, we repudiate and reject the re-
implantation of the martial law and the attempt to continue the
bloody repression against the struggling Argentinean people. We ask
for the judgment and punishment of those responsible for the massacre
and for freedom for all prisoners.

The Argentina of the banks and the great capitals is bankrupt: this
year the harvest reached records historical levels and at the same
times there are millions of hungry people, the productive apparatus
lies idle and the mass of unemployed has reached unprecedented
levels. It is the terminal state of a system of exploitation, of an
economic, social and political organization. ¡Enough!

The organizations listed below declare that there is a way out; but
it is incompatible with those generating chaos in the interest of
imperialism, of financial capital and of the national and foreign
capitalist monopolies That is the main point. Neither the
dolarization nor the devaluation advanced by the dominant sectors
will take us out of this never-ending suffering. These are just
different ways of carrying out new confiscations of the product of
our labor.

They must all go. We have to end, not only with the De la Rua –
Cavallo but also with the Rodr*guez Sa*, and all the parties and
provincial governors who seek an agreement with the IMF robbers. They
have to pay for the crisis: the bankers, the corporations of the
great capitalists, the monopolies that benefited from the
privatizations, the robbers of the state patrimony. It is necessary
to nationalize the baking system, to put an end to the freezing of
salaries and savings of the workers and even of the small producers
and traders, and to freeze instead the huge funds of the great
thieves which have already taken out of the country 150 billion
dollars. All the privatized services must be renationalized and
payment of the foreign debt must be stopped. On this basis we must
reorganize the economy, and under a national plan drawn by the
workers set in motion the paralyzed production.

In order to do that we need the struggling people to deliberate and
organize. We call for the election of an assembly or national meeting
of employed and unemployed workers, including the piqueteros
movement, the combative sectors, the left parties and all those who
are fighting against the present economic system. This is an
indispensable requisite in order to structure a power that will rise
against the decomposition of the present power. Other Argentina: not
that of the Peronistas, of the Alianza, of the bankrupt pseudo-
progressives, but the Argentina of the workers, which will
expropriate our eternal expropriators.

FOR A POPULAR AND WORKERS GOVERNMENT

No to the government of the Peronistas and other accomplices of the
system

Down wit the MARTIAL LAW in the Nation and the Provinces

NO TO THE IMF

NO PAYMENT OF THE FOREIGN DEBT

NATIONALIZATION OF THE BANKS

RE-STATIZATION OF THE PENSION FUNDS

FULL SUPPORT FOR THE WORKERS STRUGGLES

FOR A NATIONAL PROGRESSIVE PLAN OF STRUGGLE LEADING TO THE OVERTHROW
OF THE SYSTEM

LIBERTY TO ALL THE PRISONERS OF THE POPULAR STRUGGLE. LIBERTY TO AL*,
CASTELLS AND OTHER INCARCERATED WORKERS. ABOLITION OF ALL THE CHARGES
AGAINST THEM.
