A group of Anarchists are occupying the Argentinian Embassy in support of the peoples' rejection of their "leaders".
The occupation of the embassy is in solidarity with the insurrectionary events instigated by the majority of the Argentinian population. We wholeheartedly support the dreams and desires of the peope as they reject the right of governments and corporations to rule them.
Once heralded as the golden child of economic liberalisation, the country has now plummeted into a state of poverty and chaos, saddled with US$155 Billion debt and unemployment levels of 18%. The economic collapse in Argentina is due to the expansion of free-market liberalisation and the imposition of IMF enforced Structural Adjustment Programs including the relentless privatisation of public services. These very same policies have caused ruin across the globe, from the privatisation of water in Bolivia to the choas of Railtrack in Britain.
Instead of merely accepting the ruin wreaked by over a decade of IMF austerity measures and structural adjustment policies - policies that continue a centuries old system of profiteering and exploitation - people across Argentina have autonomously organised accountable and democratic self-governing assemblies to transfrom the country.
We have occupied this embassy to highlight the illegitimacy not just of the Argentinian government, but of all governments. The situation in Argentina shows both the failure of capitalism as a global system and the revolutionary strength of peoples' empowerment.
We endorse the peoples' cry of no leaders no governments!
We endorse peoples' liberation!
We endorse the creation of a new society, free from oppression and exploitation!
We endorse the continued destruction of capitalism!

cops turning up 20 minutes after the balcony was
occupied. There are currently 8 people held at
West-end Central poice station. They will likely be
held until 2morrow and probably bailed to appear at
a magistrates court sometime next week. Keep checking IMC or email them at

They are to appear in court tomorrow at 10am at Bow St magistrates
court in Covent Garden.

The Action
We gave the Argentian Ambassador his very own personal reception - comlete with D-Locks, the red and black flags, banners, concise and forceful speeches of support, aaaand, forrero rocher chocolates.... whooo, the ambassador, he be spoiling us....(with his neo-liberal revo-smashing austerity-endorsing ways)..
these tongue in cheek choccies were soon squidged under-foot by the forces of her majesty's plod, who, incidentally agreed with us on many an anarcho society of the future point.The staff of the embassy supported our actions wholeheartedly too, thanking us as we were led away by cops.
Victory.

this was a wicked action and one that i'm proud to have been a part of. Thanks a lot to everyone involved in the occupation, the banner & leafleting and the picture taking. the euphoria i felt when i saw the red and black colours flying was pretty intense....i would recommend it to anyone....theory without action is like underground flowers.

To think of the hundreds of thousands of disenfranchised Argentinians who now know that they are not alone in their plight - that 10 or so brothas & sistas in Brook Street, W1, are shoulder to shoulder with them in their struggle.
Oh, come on, get a life!!!
Yes, Argentina is in deep shit, caused by shitty politicians with even shittier economic views on how to run their country. But if you seriously expect that ‘anarchy’ is the solution, and that such a silly little event will even make a dent in the world, you are even deeper in La La Land than the politicians.

made a difference. Of course it ain't gonna change the
world in itself but we have had people from Argentina
Germany, Australia, UK etc etc write to us (and on IMC)
expressing how excited they are by this action. What is
important is for people to see the solidarity that exists
internationally when people rise up and take control.
We made a small but significant difference for people who
see that direct actions are possible. With only a small
group of people we highlighted an issue and highlighted the
revolutionary struggle of the people of argentina. We took
the embassy!
This one small gesture highlights a truth of great
consequence: people acting in solidarity with each other
can undermine the facade of capitalism and the state.
Direct actions chip away at the dying edifice of power and
show the chinks in the armour (to mix a few metaphors).
These acts highlight what the state knows: that their power
is illusory. Imagine if 100, 1000, a million people rise
up and reclaim what is theirs. That is what these actions
suggest. In themselves they are not the end. They are
perhaps tokens but the more people who make these gestures,
the more people who see the flimsy nature of power
structures and governments and corporations the more chips
we make in the dam wall the faster the whole fucking thing
collapses and we can all burst through to the other side.
YES, this action (and all actions like it) made a
difference!

Call me a cynic (or far worse, i'm sure) but to quote your remark "Imagine if 100, 1000, a million people rise
up and reclaim what is theirs", "imagine" is exactly what happens. We can all play the 'what if' game.
Groups 'plot' their next actions, with the best intentions of leading to the downfall of the evil that is Global Capitolism.
Yet inevitably said actions are either so small that the are not even noticed by the world in general (ie the Embassy flag raising), or like the various May Days, they play into the hands of those who wish to portray you as wishywashy hippies, loony lefties or dangerous anarchists intent on destroying the status quo (sadly, not the band) with no coherant workable replacement, apart from maybe massed tree hugging, vandolism & compulsary drug taking.

symbolic actions can never replace actual uprisings i agree. however, i also believe that they have a power and influence beyond the obvious. i have seen that picture of the occupation in all sorts of strange and unexpected places on the web over the last few days, and i do think it is having an effect. For some, as you say, it might have the effect of demonising the anarchist movement and its ideas, but the beauty of raising the red and black flag in such a visible way and in a non-violent action i think is that it indicates to any that are interested something deeper and more profound than the usual 'rape n pillage' perception. for me, the red and black always brings to mind the spanish revolution and the success of the anarco-communalists/anarcho-syndicalists in self-organisation in those years before the civil war. and you'd be surprised at how many of older people sympathise with anarchist ideals. i was in a pub in manchester before christmas and, after having a few too many i got talking to two fifty/sixty year old gentlemen on the table next to me. they told me that if there was an anarchist-inspired revolution tommorow they'd join right in and that it is a shame there aren't more anarchists about.
part of the 'public image' problem of anarchism is, i think, a symptom of(post) modernity - the loss of history. anything that took place before the last few days matters little to the media and therefore to most people. by raising the red and black flag i feel we demonstrated our belief in the continuity of anarchist ideals and struggles.
and anyway, it was fucking good fun and if all it served to do was inspire and uplift the people who have said they have been inspired and uplifted by it then it was, for me, worth it.

Thoughts of action

Getting back and seeing the response that has been generated is amazing. The comments and discussions that have ensued on IMC cannot just be dismissed as preaching to the converted, whoever the converted may be - stuff on IMC and elsewhere does reach a large variety of people. However one of the aims of the action was to inspire other people to do stuff - even within the "activist community" there seems to be a fair amount of apathy and if the only outcome from this is that it inspires others then I'm happy.I believe we did far more than that and whilst we were never going to start the revolution, things only start happening when groups of people start taking direct action and working in solidarity with each other.
