argentinian embassy protest

amazonn50 | 11.01.2002 14:30

Protesters occupy Argentinian embassy, 8 arrests, one protester beaten.

last night (10/01/02) a group of protesters successfully occupied the Argentinian embassy and raised an anarchist flag on the building. The occupation ended with eight of the group being arrested, three of which were held in custody. The protesters have this morning appeared in court(charges as yet unknown). The groups main concern is that when they arrived at court this morning one of their number who had refused bail due to the stringent and unrealistic conditions that were set, had very obviously been beaten during his time in custody,an outraged friend of the protester and member of IMC who was in court this morning reported that `his face was swollen and bruised `. Hopefully their will be further details on this story when people leave the court later today.

as of 3.30, 6 comrades have been up at bow st mags and recieved bail on the condition they dont go with-in 100 meters of ANY embassy!
still, at least the mag had the sense to drop another condition imposed by dumb-fuck pigs and has allowed the defendants to speak with one another!
There are 2 sisters still banged-up in the cells at horseferry rd mags awaiting to go up. bail shouldn't be a problem here.
the brother injured had been beaten by SECURITY GUARDS as he was bundled into a cell at bow this morning.
Until All Are Free Motherfuckers!
ps security guards are agents of the state and should be considered as such...you know the score people!

Has this protest been posted on the argentinian indymedia site? If not, could someone who knows spanish do so? It'd be good to show that theres solidarity all over the place....

are there any pictures of the protest? or will there be? Also, I looked on BBC and Guardian websites etc and found no mention of this, what's the deal? I would of thought this would get atleast a fleeting bit of spotlight...

BBC???

Well, I am not working at News just now, but I doubt they would have picked up on that story unless someone told them it was going on. I don't think it was well covered on the mainstream wires: AP, Reuters etc. (if at all) and by the time I saw it on Indymedia -- and called the embassy -- the protest ahd finished / been broken up.

If things are on-going or about to happen, call the BBC on

020 8743-8000 and ask to speak to the Radio or TV (depending on what you want) Home News Organiser and say that you are a member of the public giving news. Then be sure you know what is happening, why you think it is important and any details about what one would expect to see/hear if you were there.

But despite the serious situation in Argentina, relatively small demos at its foreign embassies might not be seen as news.

If you have ever been outside eg. Turkish Embasy (Greek Cypriots) Iraqi Embassy (Kurds) Indian High Comission (Kashmiris and Sikhs) etc. etc. there are near permanent small demonstrations and sometimes they spill over too... but as they are small scale they rarely get mentioned.

If one were inclined to occupy an embassy (which is against the law, so I am NOT recommending it here) and the phone lines were left up, you might think of ringing media organisations from the action... that would add drama and sexy it up a bit in the eyes of the person who has to decide what to deploy and where.

no media? not surprised

well you cant expect coverage when shit all has been given to argentina itself! im told reporters have been prevented from filming in argentina because the government fears that if the whole world sees this then they might also rise up. if the debt is lifted in argentina then it may open the floodgates for further uprisings elsewhere.

Tons of news desks were emailed with the press release within minutes of the embassy being taken.

A comrade was sitting in a cyber cafe ready to press the send button once s/he got the phone call ...

Also the original photos that are also here on our beloved imc are also on a "proper" press agency's site as they were taken by a press photographer.

There were phone calls from the press - one from Channel 4, and a voicemail message from London Tonight. Unfortunately one of the mistakes made by TPK was that the phone number listed on the press release was in the pocket of one of the group locked on who was arrested!

In light of this TPK would be more than happy if people were to contact channel 4, london tonight, guardian or whoever you fancy asking them why they didn't cover it.

There are considerations of perhaps doing a bit of a press conference outside a random embassy as the bail conditions state not to go within 200 metres of any dilomatic premise (NB apart from one tpk who was given a bail condition of 100 metres) which surely covers most of London!
