Female Student Lead Battle with State Police

joram | 13.01.2002 14:26

Student engaged State Police in street battle in the little capitalistic centre.

Work in the usually Capitalistic Wandegeya Centre came to a standstill as over 60 state police battled with students who attempted to march towards Constitutional Square to join Uganda Peoples Congress public rally.

Students at the University woke up to an early morning vigorous mobilisation for the rally and when activists got the numbers, they marched towards the capitalistic centre, some through the main gate while others used the small gate near University Hall, the operation was well cordinated kind of resembled Praha Action day.

They were carrying a big banner reading “Makerere University Supports The Global Coalition Against Terrorism.” "To Hell with Military Dictatorship", one poster refered to the State police General Katumba as "Osama Bin Katumba". They also had campaign posters of former presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye(the Colonel) and tree branches.
They were were singing anti-Museveni(uganda Military Dick) slogans.

At Wandegeya just near the roundabout, the students came face to face with the anti-riot Police and the first battle began at about 11:00 a.m.Police fired teargas while the charged up students numbering over 300 replied with stones.

The coppers who were dressed in combat-like fatigues overpowered students and forced them to break into small groups that took off into different directions.
The biggest group took the Makerere University Hill Road through Law Development Centre before another group of policemen carrying batons encountered them near the former Kisekka Hospital.

Realising that they would not reach the Constitutional Square, the students retreated to Makerere University main gate and began singing anti-Police and Museveni slogans.
Thugs of the Anti-Riot Police Unit were meanwhile watching them from Wandegeya where they had mounted a temporary parade and closed half of Bombo Road.

In an attempt to attract the attention of Police, students who were commanded by a Female comrade moved big stones and blocked the Wandegeya Nakulabye Road.
The now idle police thugs then mounted an impromptu parade and within minutes they were marching towards the gate.Students threw stones but the cops continued marching towards them.

Coppers started Using live ammunition and anyone with a camera or looked like a journalista was arrested and taken to the chef of the Military intelligence Safe houses.According to inside reports from the safe houses, rapes and gross abuses are at high level.
