DAILY MAIL SLAGS OFF BLOODY SUNDAY FILMS

Two films depicting the events of Derry’s Bloody
Sunday, 30 January 1972, were premiered this week in
Derry. The first, a Granada Television drama entitled
"Bloody Sunday" shown in the city on Sunday night, was
built around the character of Civil Rights campaigner
and SDLP Stormont MP Ivan Cooper. Perhaps not
surprisingly, the film came under fire from
revisionist historian Ruth Dudley-Edwards, writing for
the British tabloid The Daily Mail. Under the heading
"Bloody Fantasy" Dudley-Edwards and another Mail
journalist made a number of spurious claims about the
film’s accuracy. The articles provoked outrage,
leading to a call for a boycott of the Daily Mail and
other papers in the Mail group, including Ireland on
Sunday, according to the Derry News and the BBC.
The second film, titled "Sunday", by Channel 4 writer
Jimmy McGovern, was shown on Wednesday night in the
city and is likely to provoke even greater
controversy. This film, which was the result of a long
term project with greater community involvement,
charts the build up to the day of the ill-fated Civil
Rights march, the massacre itself, and the subsequent
massacre of the truth at the hands of Lord Widgery.
Following the screening of the two films, all people
would agree that both make a valuable contribution to
understanding the traumatic events of that day. To
make comparisons between the two would be invidious
but there is widespread consensus in the city that
"Sunday" is by far a more powerful and accurate
reflection of the events.

Unsurprising

Well, what does one expect from the Daily Mail? A recognition that the British Army murdered 13/4 innocent protesters... It would be nice, but we live in the real world (so we keep being told). Anyway, Fuck That, cos I have never, and never will, pay money for a copy of that reactionary piece of shit. I had enough of it when I was in hospital last Xmas, never again.

Sorry to say not suprised

Must say that i am not suprised at the reaction of the Daily Mail, the are rather conservative so anything that causes them to question the involvement of British Forces in the North is due to provoke adverse reaction.
We all have to accept that what happened was wrong, but we must now move on from the past to a brighter future (hopefully)

a very good film

I have not seen the "Sunday" yet, but I thought the "Bloodly Sunday" was Brillant film. The army were showed for what they are and what they did. and the film showed how different polical groups reponed to the situation.

But also the way the film was shot was very good. I seen lots of depiction of demonstrations on tv before and most are crap, you know a few extras standing around with placards with no propose. and for ITV all the acting was excilant.
A few more things on tv like that would make it worth watching.

Well, the state helps things along nicely by closing down the mines, shipyards, factories and docks. Then, when the jobs dry up, it encourages youths in the early stages of manhood to join it's forces in order to make some sort of living. Then, it fills them full of bullshit and tells them their regiment, unit, platoon, section are the best in the world. It tells them anyone not a member of any of the above is worthless. It has it's own vocabulary. 'Take-out'= Kill and so on. It then sends them to far off and not so far off 'trouble spots' to act as paid gangsters for the capitalist cause. Once there, it tells them everyone else is a threat. Robbed by months of propaganda and helped along by approved bullying and brutalisation, it sends them into situations like Bloody Sunday, My Lai, Amritsar, Nanking, Lidice. Then these party political bastards shed tears when the boys come home in boxes and lay wreathes on war memorials.
Army Soldier.....Be the Best!
