Welsh MEP breaks Iraqi sanctions

Ron F | 24.01.2002 20:21

Growing recognition of the immorality and ineffectivenes of sanctions against Iraq is leading at least some politicians to do the right thing.

"We are in the process of destroying an entire society. It is as simple and terrifying as that. It is illegal and immoral". - Denis Halliday, former UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, October 1998.

24/1/2002

A Welsh MEP broke international sanctions in the European Parliament this week with the symbolic sale of dates from Iraq. The action was in protest against these sanctions that it is claimed have caused the deaths of 500,000 children.

Speaking from Brussels, where he joined Green MEP Caroline Lucas in the illegal sale of dates, Plaid Cymru MEP Eurig Wyn said: "Information from independent humanitarian aid sources clearly show that food and medicine in Iraq are in short supply and the country's infrastructure - health service and water supplies - is in tatters, leading to the deaths of innocent children.

"These sanctions were imposed to force Saddam Hussein to allow UN inspectors to check on potential weapon-making plants. They have not worked and have hit the ordinary people of Iraq hard. UNICEF, the UN's children's fund, estimates that the sanctions have been a factor in the deaths of 500,000 children."

Dates were Iraq's second biggest export prior to its invasion of Kuwait. However, following the Gulf War ten years ago, the country has only been permitted to export oil through a UN-run programme. Sale of any other product is an imprisonable offence.

The dates have been bought from Iraq by Voices in the Wilderness, a group that wants the sanctions to end so that Iraqis can start trading again and re-build essential facilities, a view shared by many MEPs.

Wow, so Plaid Cymru have joined the SWP? Wonder why that hasn't been reported on telly.. Probably part of the New World Order conspiracy, huh?

SWP - Plaid Cymru

So now we know why Red Action left the SWP front group, the Socialst Alliance. Well, that or they got pissed off with the middle class, muddle heads who make up the majority of the membership of the SWP. Anyone know the Welsh for 'sign this petition'?

I've just heard the Liberal Democrats have agreed to join the SWP. What do people think of that?

Do not trust politicians

25.01.2002 21:56

I stick by what I said. The lead piece reinforces the ridiculous idea that politicians and party politics can offer solutions to the genocide of the Iraqi people. Do you really think that a few self-serving/publicising bastards in Brussells will make a difference? If you do, then you really need to address your woeful lack of political nouse.
I included the swp because they try to sell people the same lies - vote without illusions? No, don't vote, don't give them any *legitimacy*
