The Cubans are coming!

Rock around the Blockade | 24.01.2002 23:50

Cuban Speaking Tour of Britain, coming to a town near you!

From 1 - 18 March 2002 Kenia Serrano and Nancy Coro, leading members of Cuba's Union of Young Communists, will be touring Britain with Rock around the Blockade. This tour will offer a fantastic opportunity to hear about Cuban socialism. The young Cubans will talk about how socialism works, about surviving 40 years of illegal US blockade, and discuss Cuba's position on major world events like globalisation, the anti-capitalist movement and the war in Afghanistan and much more. Today, socialist Cuba stands at the head of a growing movement of global resistance to barbaric imperialism that is ravaging our planet. In the international forums of the world, Cuba has been the voice of the oppressed, speaking out against the imperialist war, against increasing world poverty, against the destruction of the environment, against Zionism's war against the Palestinian people, against the grotesque opulence of a tiny minority in the powerful nations set against increasing squalor and degradation in the developing world. Cuba offers hope, because it offers an alternative! The speaking tour will be an opportunity to hear more about that alternative. We aim to build a movement in Britain, which shares the values of the Cuban Revolution. The experience of Cuba's revolution can provide answers for those of us questioning the current world order because it is an example of a viable socialist society. The capitalist propaganda machine has attempted to purge our minds of even the idea of another form of society. Cuba is a spanner in the works of this monstrous machine. Not only is it surviving, despite economic and political isolation, terrorist attacks and military intervention by the United States, but it is also leading the ideological fight back against capitalism. In Britain one third of children live in poverty. The working class get third-rate healthcare and education and are forced into low-paid insecure jobs. Immigrants escaping economic and political persecution are criminalised and racists and police attack black and Asian people every day. Sick of it? Come and hear about the alternative. We plan to include visits to hospitals, youth centres, schools, universities, squats and housing associations, as well as film showings, gigs and social events - a revolutionary mix of music and politics. We need your help with venues, publicity, sound-systems, transport, bands etc. Can you organise something in your community, workplace, or place of study? Get in contact and GET INVOLVED! This is an opportunity NOT to be missed!! VENUES - The Cubans are Coming! The american goverment leased the base in 1902. It renewed the lease in the 30's indefinately paying 5000$ a year but the consent of BOTH goverments would be needed. Since 1959 Cuba is NOT accepting the 5000$. But as you know the US have tried in various ways to destroy Cuba so if Cuba tells them to go away there is no doubt in my mind that the US will use that as an excuse to invade Cuba.
