McDonalds billboard subvertising

McArt | 18.02.2002 14:48

Spotted at Bedminster Down, in Bristol - a somewhat active city for subvertising. Anyone seen any in london or elsewhere recently?

That's all very well, but what are we to do about
this monster sign which has showed up 100 metres
above Liverpool like nothing else in the city?

It appeared yesterday. To beat this in London
they'd have to wrap a banner around Nelson's column.
As everyone knows, advertising on Nelson's column
is strictly reserved for Greenpeace, not Cokacola.

Oh dear, it's blown off

Oh dear, it's blown off
Oh dear, it's blown off

I had always thought that structure at the top was
a mobile phone transmitter. Now we know.

Having been reading books about (the theology of)
neoclassical economics, they have a problem explaining
away advertising. In their model, we are all
rational agents who rationally use the market to
satisfy our wants. And this is fair and just.
Unless the market is able to alter our wants by
exploiting our human weaknesses so that we buy that
which is harmful to us at a high price.
Neoclassical theory says that advertising is needed
and justified so that people are aware of what is
available in the market. While this might apply to
classified ads, it's no good for excusing this kind
of thing.

Everytime I look out the window, my brain automatically
processes the word image (because I am literate).
I can't turn off this feature, and they are exploiting
this fact.
*cocacola* is inserted into my thought train.
Is it a cloudy day? *cocacola*. I wonder if it's a
full moon? *cocacola* There's that helicopter noise;
I wonder if it's the police again. *cocacola*.

I'm thirsty. Tea, coffee or water. *cocacola*.
Sorry, can't help it. I'm only human.
Luckily I can't stand the stuff. Especially as they
make enough money to buy up more of my vision field
and sequester ever more of my precious brain time
to processing their "message".

I don't think it's doing us any good.

Things go higher with Coke Feb 19 2002

Liverpool Echo

AT 425 feet above the ground, this is the highest
advertising hoarding in the country.

The banner above St John's Beacon in Liverpool city
centre, was put up by workers who scaled the side.

The top of the tower site has been let to Birmingham
advertising agency BlowUP by the building's owners,
Land Securities.

BlowUP managing director Mark Bracey said the Coca
Cola sign will be there for several weeks.

"Originally it was supposed to be a Christmas message
to Merseyside from Coca Cola but the bad weather
ruled that out," he explained.

"There is a lot of interest from national and local
advertisers."

Special lights to illuminate the site will be installed
soon, he added.

Land Securities announced the site was available
to advertisers last year with an asking price of
around £600,000.

One in Sheffield

There was one in Sheffield, Like the Bristol one, to which a pixie added the words "and they are all McRubbish". I see subverted bill boards all the time in our fair city.
