Colombian anarchist statement

COLOMBIAN ANARCHIST STATEMENT

We reject the escalation in the war caused by the breakdown of talks between the government and the FARC. Likewise we reject the official version according to which this breakdown was “caused” by the kidnapping of a senator, because there is evidence that it was planned well in advance: the Plan Colombia required this escalation in order to see through its business in the shape of the arms deal made between the Colombian state and the North American capitalists.

We consider that the best response is a radical opposition to the war which recognizes that the war will not de-escalate without concessions on the part of the state. This opposition includes a generalized civil resistance: not only against guerrilla attacks (1) but also based on actions such as:
Direct action/ desertion from the different armies
Non payment campaigns against the war waged by the state and the bourgeoisie on the population, for example refusing to pay the public utilities bills (2)
Strikes, including a political strike for peace

We reject the way in which politicians and mayors such as the mayor of Bogota Antonios Mockus support “civil resistance” when at the same time they support policies which harm the people. We also reject the biased stance of the media, in particular Colombian TV, who use terrorist acts to spread disinformation and fear among the population, and as a way to improve their ratings.

We support a social revolution which does not have to wait till “after the war”, and which is made by everyone, not just an armed vanguard. Historically it has been shown that an authoritarian, hierarchical opposition only creates a new elite of oppressors, in which exploitation continues despite images to the contrary.

We think opposition to the war should focus on its causes: the defence at any cost of the profits and benefits made by the Colombian state and national and foreign capital from the exploitation of the majority of Colombians. Those who benefit include arms dealers, drug traffickers, politicians, the media, large property owners and financiers, and all those on whichever side who profit from the war and the suffering of the people.

1) Translators note: this refers to the widely publicized cases of unarmed villagers filling the streets of their villages in order to dissuade the guerrillas from launching an attack on the village (usually aimed at the police station but affecting anyone and anything in the way).
2) Translators note: this refers to the way Colombian electricity companies increase their charges, using the cost of damages caused by guerrilla attacks as an excuse but obviously charging the consumer way above what corresponds to the costs of these damages.

The liberated zone, formerly San Vicente del Caguan, was not "authoritarian, and a hierarchical opposition that only created a new elite of oppressors, in which exploitation continues despite images to the contrary..." It was run by peasants and workers. To the contrary, history has shown that anarchism is a critique and not a serious alternative to capitalism.

History has shown that authoritarian liberation
struggles often lead to dictatorships and/or
a new form of state repression. And the idea
that authoritarian left critiques are the only
serious alternative to capitalism is total
nonsense, and an example of why so many people
are tired of hearing this fanatical rubbish.

Anarchism has problems as does every movement
that challenges capitalist hegemony, but to
suggest that it is only a critique is easily
dismissed by pointing to the early successes
of the spanish civil war, that is until the
soviet union (i.e. the authoritarian left) is
now known to have been primarily responsible
for its destruction (in the last 2 years,
internal soviet documents reveal that the level
of counter-revolutionary activity against
the anarchists and left marxists destroyed
the revolution).

sounds great mate, but I hope you're out there helping those poor lads called the FARC who are risking their backsides for all of ya. I'll hate to think you wrote your statement in the comfort of some upper-middle class home. As a colombian friend of mine told me, whatever you do, don't organize a "non-violent peace" demonstration when the para's arrive. Run!!!!

Anon, I'm sorry you think that what the FARC are trying to do in Colombia is just "fanatical rubbish." And on authoritarianism, it is not inevitable, as some anarchists claim to think especially if you consider latin american political history which has nothing to do with some big country in eastern europe or U.S. corporations in china.

The FARC and ELN are concrete

But I'm sorry, when you are dealing with paramilitaries who think nothing of cutting up peasants with chain saws you have got to be 'authoritarian'. A revolution is one of the most authoritarian things imaginable: one section or class of a population forcing its will on another class or section of the population. The capitalist class of no country gives up its power without a fight and will go on and on and stop at nothing to try and get it back after they have been overthrown. Just look at how they are still doing everything they can against Cuba more than 40 years after they were kicked out. Remember the Nicaraguan Contras, the Angolan UNITA, the Afghan mujahedin etc etc. An authoritarian response was necessary if the counter-revolution was not going to triumph, but the important thing is the class character of that state response, whether it is working class or peasant based. That is the important thing not whether it is authoritarian or not.

The Spanish civil war is a very hoary old chestnut, but the fact is that the fascists would have won far quicker with the open support of the German and Italian fascists and the tacit support of the imperialist countries like Britain if the Soviet Union had not helped as well as volunteers mainly from the communist parties of other countries.

The theory that everything would have been fine if only the Soviet Union hadn't 'meddled' just doesn't wash if we look at the history of anarchism.
If you are a communist/socialist/marxist you have many concrete examples of past and present experiences. You can make criticisms of this or that aspect of them, say they were terrible or made many remarkable achievements depending on your opinion or the particular example, but you have a starting point. If you're an anarchist there is nothing concrete, only a theory.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-Army of the People (FARC-EP) and National Liberation Army (ELN, another guerrilla organisation that follows a line more similar to that of Che Guevara) are operating in very difficult conditions and they will make mistakes. But they are the effective leading forces of the revolutionary movement.

Long live the FARC-EP! www.farc-ep.org
Long live the ELN! www.patrialibre.org (ELN North West War Front)

ALL OF WHICH FAILED

Failed?

Hardly failed. The Cheka, The NKVD, OGPU, KGB, Stasi, Kronstadt, Katyn, Budapest, The May Days, Prague, Ukraine, Afganistan, Stalin, Mao, Trotsky, Pol-Pot, Tiannamen Square.
Absolute triumphs of Marxism each and every one!
(Can't claim originality for this, I saw it on another list ages ago and it struck a chord).

Valid points have been made from both sides, communist and anarchist, and we have the right to criticize other points of view as we should our own to steel our political standpoints. But by the end of the day, however, what are the sectarianists and dogmatists really doing in Colombia anyway? Or anywhere else for that matter? As the indymedia writer, 'Militante', puts it: "To divide and conquer is the enemy's greatest weapon."

Viva FARC!

Viva ELN!
