Social Centre continues

THE RADICAL DAIRY | 10.03.2002 20:09

Blag mission 2: Empowering our lives and shaping our futures.

The radical dairy project was conceived by a group of friends in Jan 2002. It has so far been open as a social centre for 2 months.

In this time we have made continuous improvements to the building with a lot of help from our neighbours and new found friends. We are currently running a wide range of events (see calendar) including DJ workshops for kids, film showings, women and queer cafes, yoga, English for non-English speakers, shiatsu massage, political discussions groups and we are hosting Women Speak Out conference over the international women’s day weekend.

All these events have been organised in the way that we want society as whole to operate: in a non-hierarchical, self-organised way. The Radical Diary has been a success for us in many ways, learning new skills, we are realising our own potential. Most of us are either unemployed or casual workers. A lot of what we have experienced growing up has politicised us and radicalised us to a point where we see an inherent corruption in how modern society operates (Hackney Council for a start!). More and more of our lives and relationships are being dominated by the rule of capitalism, at every level you are judged by your ability to consume and produce. We are brought up thinking that we are too stupid to organise our own lives, that we need politicians, celebrities, leaders or idols. The Radical Dairy shows that this is a myth and that people can come together to raise the standard and quality of life for their community by themselves.

Part of the project also encompasses information. We have a radical library with books videos and leaflets concerning issues that effect all of us that don’t get reported in the mainstream news. We are also supporting the “Hackney NOT 4 Sale” group as the issues of privatisation and the closing down of community spaces is the reason many people have rotten involved with the Radical Dairy in the first place.

We are hoping to continue our positive ‘work’ in Stoke Newington but that depends on you and your support and involvement. We feel that many positive ideas are being created here, ideas which we can all be a part of in empowering our lives and shaping our futures.

Please feel welcome to pop in for any of the workshops or simply for a cuppa and a chat and a look around.

We also have a wish list of things we need here so if you can contribute any of the following then that would be great:
· Hand towels
· Tea towels
· Rags (for cleaning)
· Plants (especially herbs)
· Containers and compost
