Justice for Shaun Rodney Campaign call picket of New Scotland Yard for
Monday 11th March, 12.30-2pm

The Justice for Shaun Rodney Campaign is holding a picket of New Scotland Yard this Monday to protest against the refusal of the Metropolitan Police borough commander for Redbridge, east London, to appoint a new team of police investigators to examine Shaun Rodney’s death.

Shaun’s family are now taking their case to Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens in the hope of convincing him to take personal responsibility and instigate a fresh investigation under the supervision of the Racial and Violent Crimes Taskforce.

On Wednesday 27th June 2001, Shaun Rodney was found dead with fatal injuries in Havelock Street in the centre of Ilford, Essex. Shaun Rodney’s family has been angered and frustrated by the flawed initial police investigation because, without any evidence and from the moment Shaun was found dead, the police have simply assumed that Shaun committed suicide. Other avenues of investigation have been ignored.

The Justice for Shaun Rodney Campaign, set up by family members, believes that the suspicious nature of the death demands a proper investigation and that there are alarming similarities to the initial police inquiries into the controversial deaths of Michael Menson in North London, Ricky Reel in Kingston and McGowan uncle and nephew in Telford, Shropshire

The family are also concerned that the date for an inquest has been set for Thursday 14th March even though the police have not concluded their investigation and active leads remain unsolved. The attempt to railroad the inquest proceedings has been challenged by the family’s solicitor, Mr Imran Khan. He has made numerous representations to the Coroner and the police for the inquest to be postponed but, as yet, in vain.

Mrs Geanette Rodney, Shaun’s mother stated, “We are going through hell and the authorities do not seem to care. All we want to know from the police is - how my son met his death? Why don’t they find out? Is that too much to ask?”

Their campaign is supported by the National Civil Rights Movement (NCRM) and by Newham Monitoring Project (NMP).

Zainab Kemsley of NMP commented “the refusal by Redbridge police to refer the investigation of Shaun’s death to the Racial and Violent Crimes Taskforce has caused his family great frustration and anger. Shaun’s parents just want to know the circumstances of their son’s death and at present it seems that senior police officers in Redbridge are the major obstacle in that search for the truth.”

Suresh Grover, Chair of the NCRM said, “The police keep making the same mistakes as they did with the Lawrence and other cases. If the family’s requests for a fresh police inquiry and postponement of the inquest proceedings are stubbornly refused, public confidence in the police force and coroners courts is likely to reach a crisis point”.
