"At one point police fired into the air to dispurse the crowds"

audio transcript:

"In the afternoon there was a tense stand off between a couple of hundred anti capitalist protestors and ranks of riot police in barcelona's main tourist street Las Ramblas.

Suddenly a few stones were hurled and the police charged.

This is what the authoritites here have been dreading, not to mention europes leaders meeting at their summit just a couple of miles from here. The last thing they want is for their talks about the economy to be overshadowed once again by violence in the street.

It wasnt a full scale riot, only five people were arrested, there was scarcely any damage, but at one point the police fired into the air to disperse the crowd.

The tactic worked, the protestors were divided into little groups and pushed out of the area."

Clashes break out at EU summit

Riot police have used batons to break up crowds of protesters staging anti-globalisation protests in the Spanish city of Barcelona, where European Union leaders are holding a two-day summit.

About 1,000 young protesters gathered in Las Ramblas, the main boulevard in the city centre, to taunt police and throw stones.

Police responded by hitting protesters with batons...

Riot police break up Barcelona crowd
By Reuters - March 15 2002 17:47

BARCELONA, Spain (Reuters) - Spanish riot police have lashed out with batons to break up a crowd of several hundred anti-globalisation activists during a summit of European Union leaders in Barcelona.

The gathering was quickly dispersed in the first serious violence of a meeting taking place under a massive security shield. But some two hours later groups of activists were still milling around the downtown area under the gaze of police.

Reuters correspondents at the scene said baton-wielding officers had moved in with the considerable force that is a trademark of the Spanish riot police to break up a crowd of young protesters gathering around the city's Liceu opera house on the historic Ramblas avenue, near the harbour.

Violent clashes mar EU summit
20.14PM GMT, 15 Mar 2002

Rock-throwing protesters have been beaten back by riot police in Barcelona at the start of a European Union leaders' summit.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators swarmed into the city from around Europe and Spain, particularly from the violence-scarred Basque region, to protest against EU plans to liberalise energy and financial markets.

The clashes indicated that anti-globalization violence may once again be returning to international political meetings following a lull in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Several protesters, from groups including some from Britain and France, were dragged away by plain-clothes police officers as others set fire to rubbish bins, leaving a cloud of smoke hanging over parts of the historic old town.

Summits need to be 'scaled down'
18.57PM GMT, 15 Mar 2002

Gerhard Schroeder, the German Chancellor, has been saying today that these protests show that we do need to move away from these largescale summits.
They do tend to be a target and then when there is violence it distracts from the business they're trying to get on with.
And so they can end up being a bit of a waste of money, a waste of time and of course they cause an awful lot of disruption to a lot of people.
