Police raid Radical Dairy Social Centre

LondonSCN | 12.04.2002 09:30

This morning over 30 riot police stormed into the
Radical Dairy Social Centre in Stoke Newington
as part of the Mayday campaign of repression.

30 riot police in conjunction with London Electricity
used a hydrualic ram to force entry to the Radical
Dairy. The police said that they had a warrant to investigate the abstraction of electricity and the misuse
of drugs. No drugs were found but a computer [which was used as part of a free internet service for local residents] was siezed as "proof" of abstracting electricity!! The police also read out a statement saying that because a Mayday leaflet was displayed in the window of the Social Centre that it proved that the building was used as "part of the infrastructure to Mayday" , which now seems to be an illegal act!

No one was arrested but the centre is now without
electricity. During the raid angry residents came out onto the streets and gave the cops hassle. This is
the third visit the cops have made to the dairy. The first
being on Friday April 5th. They used the guise that they
had broken down outside the dairy and were waiting for
a repair vehicle, that obviously explained why they were
outside for 3 hours taking peoples photographs!! On
this occasion they left after the local residents came out
in support of the Radical Dairy, which has been offering free events like Yoga, Shiatsu massages, vegan cafe,
DJ workshop for kids, Drama and singing lessons.
The second occassion was on Tuesday April 9th,
three cops from different police stations inc. a video
camera were filming the structure of the building. The police were there for only 10 minutes as again local
residents including a women with her child complained
at the continued harrasment of the collective which runs the centre.

A statement will be issued by the Radical Dairy within
the next few hours. Meanwhile the centre needs all the
help it can get. Come down to 47 Kynaston Road,
Stoke Newington, London N16. Phone 020 7249 6996
for more news.

Holy shit

Those fuckin bastards.

I think that the all the effort they're putfing in to repressing the Dairy shows that social centres constitute a real potential threat to the State.

I really hope they don't succeed in shutting it down before mayday...

its all a big test

I hope _we_ suceed in shutting _them_ down before mayday!

In Italy the social centres movement wouldn't have got off the ground if it wasn't for the mayor of Milan raiding them all, declaring squatters 'ghosts', at which point the 'ghosts' rioted for three days and the city was forced to recognise the centres.

The question is- can we do that here?
What happens if we do?
What happens if we don't?

In Italy Social centres(CS) have proved to be the only way for ordinary people to get their shit together.
With the advent of Berlusconi's neo nazi regime the (CS) are under serious pressure from the various state thugs/ cops:
It's pretty obviuos that Phoney Blair and berlusconi are much of a much and that Blair is not going to stand for a network of social centres sprouting out of the inner city communities. The UK authorities will do everything they can to make surre that these communities remain dead end areas where people are scared to go out at night, and where no one speaks to anyone they don't know.
How about some more info, on the cops who raided this place.
Who was in charge of the raid, which cop shop does he work out of, his phone number and extention.
The fax number of the copshop. The number of your local paper and the local counciller of the ward. If you put that sort of info up I'd give a bell send them some relevant bumf.

Winning back OUR local communities is fundamental in the fight against globalisation rock on !

Shocking.

I can't believe they took your computers as 'proof' that electricity was being used! It's obvious intelligence gathering and downright outrageous. I'd ask a lawyer if they're allowed to do that - seriously it all sounds very dodgy to me.

Good luck over there, we need more spaces like the dairy.

Police Absurdity

12.04.2002 19:21

Unbelievable! Speaking as a Hackney resident who is paying for this farcical Police behaviour, I would rather they spent some time making Clapton a safer place for our children, personally. At a time when we are fighting to keep our libraries, One O'clock Clubs (Save Springfield before it's gone to the developers forever...)and other public spaces it's beyond belief that true community services are coming under attack from the Police. If they want to radicalise Hackney citizens, they're making a pretty good job of it. We hadn't yet managed to get down to the Dairy, but we'll sure be down there now to give you guys as much support as possible. Who needs the National Grid anyway?

I reckon your on front line, trying to create local community projects, is not want the authorities want.
The cops lost interest in law an order years ago, they are now purely a political force/traffic Police.
Sure when radical elements in the the local community starts getting it's shit together in places like the Dairy, 30 pigs in 7 vans turn up to "enforce the law". Keep posting stuff, I am definately interested and will chip in with some help if I can. local issues are the same all over the world it's part of globalisation.

In Solidarity From Brighton

14.04.2002 15:04

From the squatted Locomotive Works Community Project we send a message of solidarity. What the police are doing is political repression, it is as simple as that anything else they say is simply lies.

The state is scared of people doing things for themselves, once we start organising ourselves the state becomes powerless and irrelevant.

Social Centres are hard work but can be very rewarding. The Loco. Works centre in Brighton has been running for 4 weeks now, we've had a variety of events: video screenings, acoustic music, vegan cafe, blacksmithing, arts workshops, kids disco, art space and live radio broadcasts.

The Centre has been squatted in the corner of a proposed Sainsbury's development, with supermarket, posh hotels, yuppie flats, with some token "key worker bedspace" accomodation (read shoe box bedsits for nurses) (see www.schnews.org.uk/archive/news347.htm).

If you are in Brighton visit the Locomotive Works Community Project at 1 New England Road (ex Harvest Forestry Shop).

boobie bobbies

14.04.2002 22:13

Boobie bobbies seems to be an apt description of the action of police raid of the Radicial Dairy Centre. What is it about the word "radical" that so scares the police and their minions? The police, in this incident, have joined the ranks of the RCMP, the police and othe enforcement officials who traffic in the kind of behavior,in the US of A, and other around the world in joining the infamous villians of the past the Nazi era Gestapo. Their behavior and justification in this incident is phony as is democracy becoming in this nation.

Sick and brainless are the boobie bobbies acting like this. It is people power they are trying to deny, because they don't want to share power and rights with the people. They would rather look as stupid as they act and are. It would be nice for the police to show some brains, instead of blindly and stupidly following blind and stupid orders, designed only for harassment purposes.

Take care and hang in there.

London Electricity - no surprise!

15.04.2002 16:04

I'm horrified by the way the authorities are conducting themselves. However, it comes as no surprise to learn that London Electricity is somewhere behind this. London Electricity is a wholly owned subsidiary of Electricite de France (EdF). EdF is renowned in France (and throughout the world) for its sinister and underhand activities (whether it be footstepping the elderly and vulnerable or the imposition of nuclear power plants on those who do not want them!).

I suggest that, if you were and are willing to purchase electricity, you contact one of the other electricity supply companies immediately and ask to be re-connected. Also, and importantly, report the way London Electricity has conducted itself to Ofgem (a Government body which has already expressed concern over the way London Electricity conducts its business).

Best wishes,

Jan

Electricity Abstration

22.04.2002 22:10

The police are doing their job. The primary purpose of the police is to enforce the criminal law of England and Wales. And seeing abstraction of electricity is covered by the theft act 1968.

s13 Theft Act 1968 - "Abstracting Electricity"

It is an offence for any person who dishonestly uses electricity without authority, or dishonestly causes it to be wasted or diverted.

This is an Arrestable Offence.

So its only fair and reasonable to assume the police will investigate, arrest suspects suspected of and hand case files for prosecution to the CPS for this offence.

If you want to use electricity I suggest you pay for it!

Reality check

24.04.2002 15:47

While it seems that the police are conducting an unnecessary battle against the Centre, the latest comment by "mike" does need to be answered. Were you knowingly abstracting electricity? If you weren't then the taking of the computer is indeed potentially an attempt to take information about the organisation, in which case you need legal representation and fast, particularly as regards the Data Protection act, which the police may be breaking if they take any info other than that which records the power source. If you weren't then then have provided the police with a perfect opportunity for checking thsi info anyway, which is probably not smart thinking on your part. I await the statement by the organisation with interest.
