Ananova says 'Hundreds' were in London today

zsedc | 13.04.2002 21:42

Completely innacurate and political reporting from Ananova...

Apparently, despite EVEN THE POLICE saying that at least 10-15,000 protesters were in London today to protest against Israeli atrocities and military action in Palestine, it decided to report the numbers as in the 'hundreds' rather than tens of thousands!

Go to the Feedback page and report a Factual Error, and speak your mind - especially those that attended the protest!

The numbers game

13.04.2002 22:36

The fact is that Trafalgar Square and the neighbouring streets were packed - shoulder to shoulder. Well, either the area was filled with incredibly fat men or someone is lying. Anyway, I think it is one of the largest and most enjoyable demonstrations I've been to. The speakers got a bit boring after a while, so we all got chatting and having a laugh.

I don't understand these reports that it was heaving with anger and hate. Sure, we were all angry that Israel is ethnically cleansing Palestine for 'lebensraum' and that hundreds of civilians have been massacred. But the fact that there were tends of thousands of people there really lifted our spirits and made us feel that we were the majority and that our voices could not be marginalised.

The main target of the demonstration was the US and its most-favoured proxy state, not the Jewish race. Despite being predominantly Muslim, there was just a smattering of Hezbollah flag-burning types and no-one gave the pigs an excuse to arrest a single individual.

It was a great demonstration and whatever lies the media might spout, there is no doubt that the UK showed its solidarity in one of the largest demonstrations I have ever seen in the capital.

What next?

The Ananova news report is a classic example of diluting the truth through mis-information, come on I mean 'Hundreds' are they joking? They could have at least put in a bit of effort and said 'A few thousand'. Well I suppose thats what another media outlet will do and then people will be second guessing between ananova's imaginary data and the other.

Anthony Wedgewood Benn has been to more demonstrations than you could shake a stick at, and he said it was MASSIVE.

Don't just whinge - complain loudly

I took "zsedc's" advice and emailed Ananova about their disgraceful coverage. No doubt many others did too. The report now reads "thousands", though of course it's a bit late since it's no longer news. But at least the archives will be less divorced from reality. The general tone of the report remains unchanged though, emphasising the anger instead of the remarkable fact that for such a large protest there were apparently no arrests.

BBC reportage was just as bad. It described it as an "anti-Israel" protest, which wasn't the message I got from the flyers, the organisers websites, or anyone I spoke to on the day. The obvious distinction between "anti-Israel" and opposition to Sharon's murderous policies escapes the poor journos at Bush House. Or perhaps it was an attempt at tarnishing us all as anti-semitic with the intention of detering people from the next protest.

Either way, a quick email to the official purveyors of truth doesn't hurt. The zionist supporters of Ariel Sharon do it in a very organised fashion, and so should those who oppose him.

Thanks Ron F

Thanks for that Ron - and I'm glad that they changed the report. I think we should make a habit of answering back to the media. Show them that we will not be passive consumers of their bullshit. They are concerned about their credibility. If enough of us complain, they might cut down the bullshit ratio...

How does it feel demonstrating with antisemitics and anti-feminists like Hamas and Djihad?
