UN condemns Israel over Jenin

The UN called for a report into Israel's campaign

By Rob Watson
BBC Washington correspondent

The United Nations General Assembly has passed a
resolution condemning Israel's military action in the
West Bank's Jenin refugee camp.

The assembly also called on Secretary General Kofi
Annan to resurrect his report into the Israeli offensive.

Fewer states than expected supported the move, which
passed by 74 votes to four, with 54 abstentions, hours after a Palestinian suicide bomber killed 15 people in an attack in
Israel.

The vote followed a typical General Assembly debate, with Arab and many other nations lining up to criticise Israel and its American backers.

The Palestinian
representative said Israel
was guilty of wilful killing of
civilians and the US of
shielding the Jewish state from any serious UN action.

South Africa's ambassador accused Israel of eroding the
credibility of the UN through its defiance of international
law.

Resolution 'offensive'

Speaking just before the late-night vote, Israel's
representative said the General Assembly would be
offending the memories of those killed by Palestinian
suicide bombers, including the latest victims in the
attack near Tel Aviv.

Earlier, the US ambassador had warned that one-sided
resolutions and rhetoric would only harm the Palestinian
cause.

After a complex vote the resolution was adopted,
though with many abstentions, reflecting the concerns
of European and other nations at the resolution's failure
to condemn suicide bombings.

Although General Assembly resolutions are not legally
binding, the secretary general is likely to comply in
some way with its request for a report.

In the end though, the debate changed little - the
arguments on both sides already well rehearsed and
well know

Do these Arabists have a brain. Does it not bother them, when Palestinians slaughter Israeli civilians in buses, shopping centers, disco's, pizzeria's, hotels, weddings, cafe's, restaurants, celebrating Passover, in Bar Mitzvah's, schools, trains and at pool center. You wonder, why the South African ambassador is silent on the Arab genocide in South Sudan.

No support for Terror

To be honest i, like many others, have had enough of the murderous Palestinians extremists and those who support them. We have allowed fascists with no integrity to hijack many of the positive anti-capatalist movements in this country. ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE.

wonder how ??

08.05.2002 12:12

How do Hamas claim responsibility for their attacks ?
The IRA had a special code that they used to confirm their
dirty work. The Hamas attacks seem to be confirmed within minutes of the atrocity actually taking place, you never see a "no one has claimed responsibility" in the reports.
The culprits are always named in the very first reports and
faithfully reported by all the main media channels.
The timing of this attack was perfect, sharon was right in the process of sitting down with Dubya.
It is perfect for the israeli propaganda machine.
But surely Hamas must realise this, or perhaps they are not
fully in control ????
They couldn't do a better job, just when support for the palestinian cause is picking up, they carry out another idiotic attack on a civilian target.
I for one would like to send them a clear message, i will stop supporting them if they continue attack civilian targets. the world has seen what Israel has done, let's try to put matters right. That will only be possible if the suicide bombings stop right now. If they don''t Israel will have the excuse to kick the Palestinians out, which in my opinion is why they have been following a strategy of tension

Israeli State: Main Terrorist in the Region.

08.05.2002 12:31

All Palestinians, and supporters of Palestine I have met have said how terrible suicide bombers are.
But most recognise that it is the terrible conditions that Israel has imposed on the Palestinians that has led to such terrible acts, and see the way to end violence as Justice for the Palestinians and Israels immediate implementation of all UN resolutions.
In this conflict, attrocities have been commited on both sides. But far more attrocities have been committed by the Israeli Defence Forces than by Palestinians.
We should also remember the brutality of the military occupation itself, there is no such thing as a nice occupation.
In this conflict the amount of Palestinian dead is around 5 or 6 times more than the Israeli dead.
More Palestinian Children have been killed than Israeli children. (human rights groups have produced evidence that the IDF directly targets children).
The majority of Israeli dead are Soldiers and ilegal settlers.
The majority of Palestinian dead are civilians (and a substantial proportion of them, children).
For details of Israel's truly apalling human rights record see the website of B'tselem (an Israeli human rights organisation).
We must not forget that it was not the Palestinians who started this conflict.
For over a thousand years Arabs (mainly Muslim, some Christian,) and a tiny Jewish minority tilled the soil in that region.
When Zionists decided that the only solution to anti-semitism was to set up a Jewish State in Palestine, they forgot the land was already inhabited, there solution was to drive out the indigenous people.
(I should note that some supporters of Israel claim that the 750, 000 Palestinians got up and left there homes voluntarily, but this claim is not credible, and is totally discredited by all modern historians)
Landownership figures testify to the elimination of the Palestinians.
In 1917 Jews owned 2.5% of the land in Palestine, today they own over 95% of the land. Such a radical transformation in land ownership testifies to the dispossession of the Palestinians who in 1917 formed 90% of the population of the region.
All the Palestinians are asking for is Israel to abide by international law and resolutions and end the ilegal occupation, return to it's 1967 borders and grant the right of return for Palestinian Refugees.
The Palestinians have continually made massive concessions, considering that, they, the indigenous inhabitants of Israel were driven out. I personally believe that they have made too many concessions, and to no avail, as Israel refuses to abide by any of the UN resolutions and withdraw.
In all peace negotiations Israel has constantly offered terms that fall far short of what the UN resolutions ask for, which is total withdrawal from the west bank and Gaza.
In the last peace process Israel drew up plans for Bantustans, the so called "generous offer" was not generous at all, Palestine was divided into three separate areas (with no access to each other, and no international borders)
Terrorism does not represent the mainstream of the Palestinian movement, but Israeli state-terrorism is built into the occupation of Palestine.
If Israel is serious about peace, it must prove it, by ending ilegal settlements on the West bank and Gaza strip (in accordance with the IV Geneva Convention), and a complete end to the ILEGAL occupation of Palestinian land.

Arafat just wants '67 land?? So why did Arafat set up his terror group, the PLO, in 1964? To exterminate the state of Israel, he said. But of course he has a Nobel Peace Prize now, he's a changed man... I would give him the Nobel Prize for Literature.

please josh give palestine back

in february this year, i was fortunate enough to meet up with some old friends in barcelona.

durning a radio broadcast, i commented to a then friend about how sharron is not a man of peace, the guy was insulted, he then told me palestians never had a land, and they don't deserve anything. This is the view of a radical Jew in europe (i'm not an antisemitic), there is no intention to give back the west bank to the palestians.

If the christian right of america is pushing for the ancient land of israel to be restored in full, then they can all fuck of to israel and return america to the native indians. The christian right, are not christians in the sense of christ the radical, they are blood sucking parasites in it for their own personal gain. They don't want to love their neighbours and share, they want to Kill, Steal, and degrade anyone that gets in their way. The new christian right of america is a force of evil unseen before on this planet.

peace by F117's?

the game

09.05.2002 00:04

is being played out with steadily increasingly ferocity all over the planet - the focus is at present in Israel/Palestine - a deadly game to bring us all under voluntary control -a nice mix of Shin Bet/Mossad cross fertilization of Islamic/MKUltra type mind control behind the controlling events The Dutch Pim is meanwhile offed for representing a Libertarian rightist opposition who maybe, alive threatens the whole shebang, but dead, drives the population into the hands of the safe and internationalist EU. And who by? A vegan animal liberationist. Give me strength.
