IWCA election triumphs!! Socialist Alliance humiliation..

spankhurst | 08.05.2002 20:50

The Independant Working Class Association average 20% of vote in wards they stand in and have councillor elected for Oxford estate ward. The socialist Alliance get trashed

The IWCA,the Independant Working Class Association, did incredibly well in the recent local Elections. They stood in only 5 wards , Clerkenwell in Islington, Haggerston in Hackney, in Havering and in 2 wards in Blackbird Leys in Oxford. In all wards they got over 20% (!) of the vote and in 4 almost won while in Oxford they now have a councillor, represewnting this working class estate!! This compares very favourably with the BNP vote in Burnley and Oldham. The S.A. of the SWP was humiliated almost everywhere it stood. In the SWP heartland of Hackney where they have for decades boasted of hundreds of members their top vote for the nationally famous paul foot was not 10% of the vote.In many seats they got less than 100..(the Socialist Alternative of ex-miltant did better...with councillors elected in Coventry and Southwark(?))..The idiots that they are they have proclaimed these votes a sucess, at a time when left wing parties could( for better or worse!) be winning councils!
the IWCA were set up in the 90's by people from the street fighting Anti Fascist Action and Red Action and other individuals. They were created on the understanding that right wing groups in this country, following the lead of Le Pens Front National, were abandonning street fighting for door to door campaigning over dumped cars, housing and poor services..the IWCA also rightly pointed out the growing disillusionment of the white working class with politics and that the BNP had the potential of mobilising this. Their tactics are down to earth...they go door to door and ask people what they want for their area..these surveys have been a key their sucess..the idea that the left could actually ask working class people what they think instead of telling them what to think is also pretty unique!!
There are problems with the IWCA...is it honest? do its voters know it's connection with the republicans of RedAction? ..Red Action used to criticise Militants efforts in Liverpool in the 80's..is what the IWCA doing differrent??..are they just making promises they can't keep? shouldn't they be getting people to do things themselves instead of saying 'we will sort it for you'? etc..
to me though a clear message comes through...working class people are sick of the political establishment ... of being patronised ...of being told what to think...sick of their powerlessness... the anti-authoritarian/anarchist wing of the anti-capitalist movement must see in all this that working class people haven't given up on change..they've just been let down too many times...if we get stuck in we can change things around...keep on with the Maydays but don't neglect the nitty gritty ..the union work ..the tenants/residents association.. the estate commitee ...if you do capitalism will win..and you might find all your neighbours have allgone BNP!!! and check out the iWCA websites...they come up on Lycos and Yahoo searches

Okay, if the IWCA did so well, then good. I have to say the Socialist Party also has a councillor in Lewisham, (having previously had two), so you're hardly unique. But why do you think the SA would have any reason to be sad about this? I think it would be better if the left stood on a united slate. But since the IWCA didn't, then I can only wish them well. Why do you think this makes for a 'humiliation' of the SA. We stood in hundreds of seats and polled an average of 10.2%. That is fact. You can check the stats, they're all printed on the SA's website. And also, in every single ward in Hackney, the candidates got well over a hundred votes, and Paul Foot got 20.87% of the vote. I find it slightly worrying that some people are only interested in "humiliating" the rest of the left rather than taking the fight to the enemy. Let's face it, both the votes for the SA and the IWCA, even if your figures are honest, were pathetic in terms of the national scale. But that's the best we can do at the moment. We're building for better, and we're going to keep improving. But I hardly think the British ruling class will be trembling at the single local councillor of the IWCA, nor even at Ian Page's stewardship as councillor in Lewisham. Surely we have to be interested in something more than ceaseless sectarian in-fighting and pointless squabbles?

Everyone's got loads of respect for RA and what they did anti-fascist stuff. And the IWCA are really good at dealing with stuff that is actually relevant to peoples lives and not just obscure counter cultural wank. BUT, IWCA, like Trots 'n fascists are just another trick to get people to surrender control of their own lives to a profesional elite. Working class councillos, middle class councillors, white councillors, black councillors, who fucking cares... the friendly ones are the most dangerus.

I'll sort your problems

once again the Anarchists or anti establishments prove that the far left will achieve nothing, and nothing again, and nothing in the future

Socialism is a good ideal that never gets to see prime time, because everybody associates it with the Russian and china models, and everybody on the left wants to be more hardcore or anarchist, or anything other than called a commie.

face it, anarchy will never come about, unless there is rioting a la south central L.A. Humans are not capable of managing themselves peacefully; primitivsm is about the only tried and true method for peaceful anarchy, but that won't be happening for a long long while. So grin and bear it,and vote for a socialist or a green; they're good people and might just accomplish more than labour/democrats

blah blah

WORKING CLASS COUNCILLORS

As an IWCA activist there a few misleading posts here that need straightening out.

1/ We are not and have deliberately not said that we will substitute ourselves for self activity, ie we are not saying we will do it for you. on the doorsteps we made it clear that we did not have all the answers and the refusal to make promises was well received by people sick & tried of being let down or stabbed in the back. we are not a political party (altho we were required to register to stand in elections) but an association. we are not "building the party" but offering unconditional support to existing community organisations fighting for our interests. when we initiate activity it is always deemed a success or failure based upon how many other people get involved and start doing it for themselves.

2/ re the drugs stuff, we do not advocate beating up drug dealers as the solution (although in individual cases i don't think we would go out of our way to argue against it either). the IWCA has discussed this issue over and over for the last three years to my knowledge (maybe longer) and we have so far failed to reach a consensus. there exist arguments for the legalisation of all drugs and across the other side of the spectrum arguments for a more forceful community response.
what we are all agreed on, i think i can safely say, is that we aren't interested in what individuals do in the privacy of their own homes, but we are concerned about the impact drug use has on working class communities, mugging, burglary, overdoses (bad drugs), etc.
we don't have an answer to this and we have consistently said so. however, i am sure an answer is out there if working class organisations start to influence the debate currently dominated by the police, the middle class media and the govt's laughable drugs czar. one of the manifesto pledges in hackney was to call a genuine community conference on the issue.

3/ we do have a position on asylum seekers and it was argued on the doorstep when the issue came up, which was very rarely, i have to say. Harold Hill IWCA included the issue in their manifesto. if people expected us to make it a major issue in the local elections in areas where people told us during our initial surveys that they were overwhelmingly concerned with housing, anti-social behaviour and the cuts in community services, then you can join the simplistic chorus of "refugees welcome here" along with the rest of the Left.
