Three million would die in "limited" nuclear war over Kashmir

NewScientist.com news service

A minimum of three million people would be killed and 1.5 million seriously injured if even a "limited" nuclear war broke out between India and Pakistan, warns a new study uncovered by New Scientist.

The estimates are comprised of the immediate casualty list from blast, fire and radiation if only a tenth of both countries' nuclear weapons were exploded above 10 of their largest cities. It does not take account of the inevitable suffering that would result from the loss of homes, hospitals, water and energy supplies, or the cancers that could develop in future years.

Tension between India and Pakistan over the disputed territory of Kashmir has escalated, following an attack earlier in May on an Indian army camp that left 30 dead. Troops are reported to be moving into the area, with up to a million soldiers facing each other across the border. The dispute has seen two full-scale wars and numerous lesser conflicts over the last 55 years.

Fears have centred on a scenario in which an attempt for what India's Prime Minister has called a "decisive victory" could prompt Pakistan, which has far fewer conventional military forces, to launch a nuclear attack. Suggestions on Friday that India will allow Pakistan two months to stop cross border attacks by militants have also been interpreted as buying time for an Indian attack.

Credible and devastating

The US and Asian nuclear researchers investigated the impact of 10 explosions similar to that detonated by the US over the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945. They assume that five 15-kilotonne bombs explode 600 metres above Bangalore, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and New Delhi in India, while another five explode above Faisalabad, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi in Pakistan.

They conclude that hundreds of thousands of people would be killed or badly injured in every city, amounting to 2.6 million in India and 1.8 million in Pakistan. The prospect is credible and devastating, warns M V Ramana one of the researchers from Princeton University, New Jersey and an expert on nuclear policy in India.

"It is imperative that the two countries not go to war - however limited in scale. Even the most local conflicts have the potential to escalate into a full-scale war, possibly nuclear," Ramana told New Scientist.

Nuclear arsenals

Estimates of the size of India and Pakistan's nuclear arsenals vary widely, though the most reliable are those that are founded on their stockpiles of weapons-grade plutonium and uranium.

The Institute for Science and International Security in Washington DC suggests that India has about 65 warheads made from 310 kilograms of plutonium, while Pakistan has around 40 made from 690 kilograms of uranium.

Most of the weapons are likely to be around the 15-kilotonne range and some of them may not work, says the institute's David Albright. But it is possible to conceive of circumstances in which they could all be fired, particularly if decisions have to be left to individual commanders after a breakdown in communications.

If bombs explode on the ground instead of in the air, the resulting radioactive dust could kill people across hundreds of square kilometres, Albright points out. And because the prevailing winds are from the west, India is more likely to become the victim of its own fall-out than Pakistan.

lord of the flies on the beach at F451*

25.05.2002 15:14

but can anyone estimate how it will affect us in europe ? i just want to know if there's anything we can do to ward off the danger, like stockpiling six moths of water and food or something ? does the example of chernobyl act as a 'model' here? perhaps not, for it was much closer and a fire of a uranium pile, rather than a bomb some way away. what type of bombs do they have ? plutonium, uranium, other, and again, will that make a difference ?
before sept 11th, i would never have imagined a full atomic exchange could happen, but now i simply assume it will.

*i run together here the titles of 3 excellent novels about how the world would live after such an atomic event. ON THE BEACH (by N Shute) has been well-filmed and is eerie in its phlegmatic, commonwealth 'just get on with it and die' mentality and is thus more scary than any scenes of barbaric mass chaos ! LORD OF THE FLIES (by W Golding) has not been well filmed. in the public imagination its just about nasty little boys turning into savages when cut-off from' civilization'. in fact, theres a full nuclear war raging at the time in the pacific, which is how they get to be stranded in the first place. in mythology of course, the lord of the flies is none other than beyelzebub.
FARHENHEIT 451 (R Bradbury) has been filmed, (problematically in my opinion) by Truffaut, but again as with the previous work, the film doenst emphasise the atomic war that is raging as the people of america callously go about their drive-in partying. in the end, world events catch up whan chicago is hit by a rocket from the other side of the world, in a scene which perhaps anticipates the fall fo the WTc towers.

i know it sounds callous

misleading typo

25.05.2002 21:52

Heading for the article says 30m. Article says 3m.

Having said that, when you take into account more long term factors, 30m is probably more accurate. But nevertheless the heading is misleading. Typo?

FX of nuking

26.05.2002 20:13

How to prepare here in Europe?
Go to the Pharmacist and buy huge piles of IODIUM-Pills as quick as possible(consider all people
do this in the X case , there will be nothing left) - , and after they nuke, take them
...it avoids that radioactive nuclides (Caesium;Strontium) get stored in your bones, because
that huge doses of IODIUM do this than instead of.

Would the X case be comparable to Chernobyl?
Nope more! We consider the above mentioned scenario (small amount of nukes-most unlikely, cause
when they are ash trayed, they will tend to empty there stocks! )
and add best wheather conditions (wind blows eastward, and the monsun rain period washes away
the vapour from the air) we can say that india&pakistan are like cigares pushed out in ash trayes anyway.
Further more CNN ect. will keep us uptodate where exactly the deadly fallout cloud moves.
they track it via satellite.Given the case it moves away from us, an estimated 15 Nukes exploded
(likely to be more), the radioactivity-increase will equally develop through out the globe everywhere, within
a certain time-let me tell less than 5 years.
this is because earth is a Zero Sum System:
What comes in is still there(see accounting also) and radioctive nuklides(fallout) is reduced to half
in approx. 50 years?(but its definately long term)what I cant say is the effect of simultaniously
exploding many rather than streched over a larger time period. But its likely the effect is more deadly.

But that will be not all!
Consider half of asia poisenend with radioactivity
=>all stocks in free fall
=>worldwide finance crisis with a devastating effect on western economies(consider the 1998
stock market inferno to be nothing against it)
=>an total increase of asylum seekers, trying to flee the horror zone..as I know commonwhealth
population has free access right to the UK...its unlikely they stay in a radioactive desert
=>backfall to the middle ages in the 3.rd world and "isolationism" in the 1 st world

So to Sum up:
Nuking is absolutely absurd rubbish folly.
If anyone has a pot of cold water - I wished he pulled it over Mrs Musharrafs&Vajpayees Heads.
Hopefully they come clear. The funny thing is: even if all western countries would collect
money together to buy whole pakistan at once...this will be far cheaper than exposing to a nuke war,
even though it seems to be far away.

history tells us.....

26.05.2002 21:51

WHO SELLING THESE 2 CAPITALIST BASTARDS THE TECHNOLOGY, to make nuclear weapons in the first place, these two notorious junta loving pair of capitalist cunt nations, should not have been sold nuclear weapons. giving nuclear weapons to these third world tin pot junta banana republic types is very foolish. history tells us that rampant capitalist authortarian fuks enjoy a good old war, with its patriotic jingoism to distract the peasant masses from their governments corruption, maladministration and mass poverty.

2000km closer to ground zero than London

27.05.2002 20:35

All they screamed allah hurray
a little buttom click hell opened
1 billion vaporized away
6 billion left worried what to say
"Ou big sh.. we lost 1billion export markets"

did you ever hear of the Jetstream?
Huge storms in the stratossphere?(two directions w->e and a 2nd inverse) the mushroom
peak reaches into this stream

=> it would effect us much earlier than 1 year.

=> that our honey ´n milk social welfare system will be spoiled,
I dont have to add, because there is noone left then
to swallow our export-surplus, and our mean merchanisism tactics

=> restrictive interior policy,Indymedia will be banned,
secret police hold up law order
(good example of a "limited economic ressources regime,
with overaverage educated people you find in
the GDR-chapters, Eastgermany")
christian society shift, neoliberalism,
PUBLIC EMERGENCY ORDER ACT... that will be the slogans

=> you will pay 3 times as much for your food,
and general food shortage, caused by radioactivated landside
If you are not elite, it will look worse my friend

=> final proof of"the rich die at last"thesis
->food will be catagorized in three catagories
(OK, less OK, and radioactive)
delivered to after assets(3%richsest;10% richest;87%average poor)

=> Economy:None because No export, security sector, is the only booming
branch, mass unemployment, cause people
have nothing to lose tend to start revolution,
BUF revival( cause the
Elite will finance anything they can turn against
the developing anarchism and "New Deal demands"
look at the mid ages to get a good figure about
that economy

=> Weimarization of great britain

frightening how few people are interested in such a threat,
are they all totally apathic or what?
Obviously those Pinceton guys must know those or other results
cause they know the statistics...@Rob Edward..
why not giving us the clear numbers and statistics(?)
Yea, numbers are made to manipulate(99,99% are wrong)
, why show the real figures before we ensured our profits..haha.

PS: this IODIUM-Pill proposal was a joke, except you are a
pharmacist you neither have knowledge how to dose it correctly
nor will you ensure lifelong supply

NOW CAN WAR BE AVOIDED?
Must somehow, anyhow, somehow...you know...all this e.g. mentioned
doesnt make fun when you know its real,
(I know that I lose in this case)somehow this all MUST be
avoided, if the high ranking politicians
that are rallying Mrs. Vajpayees Atomic-shelter, where he
surely has barricaded himself right now, could trick him
for a while untill the monsun rain comes, we win!
The Monsun rain must make it.
Cause those people have than other things to do,
than stepping on feed on another in full combat gear,
getting boring cause hell is not getting started.
