was a comglomerate of many things (black rights, vietnam, nuclear disarmament etc) but the unifying factor was mao's cultural revolution in china, which enshrined the right of young people to rebel. ideology is important! think about it; the start of the student rebellion and also its decline co-incides exactly with the rise and fall of the cultural revolution. what will your inspiration be in the new century ?

And as for the cultural evolution in North America, didn't popular culture in its creation of adolescence and in its development of that market, also institutionalize youth rebellion in a way as influential as the warped American adaptations of Mao? Wasn't the failure of the evolution about the triumph of capitalist culture? Surely we can get beyond 19C Marxism on this site? Blatantly there's trotsky bashing.

Every other article has some comment from some anarchist going on about how bad the SWP or Globalise Resistance are.

I'm not a trot but I do think that we should concentrate on what unites us and put our differences aside.

Thank you for enlightening us o wise one:-

We must all share a common ideological perspective.

Perhaps we could publish a weekly national newspaper aimed at thick working class people who can't read that well, a tacky coffee table magazine for their more well educated comrades and an academic journal for the true intellectual leaders of our movement.

We could stand on the High street, in the rain trying to persuade people to sign petitions that we have no intention of handing in.

We could organise large public meetings with elite panels of liberal academics, journalists and politicians applauding their tedious speeches whilst privately disavowing their reformism.

We could learn to forget the events in history which are difficult to reconcile with our ideological straight jacket from Kronstadt to the ANL. We could use history as a way of proving that we are right rather than as an opportunity to learn how we have gone wrong.

We could find ways of describing every defeat as a victory and ignore those who suggest trying differnt ways of working.

We could attack people who work differently or prioritise issues differently for distracting workers from the one true struggle rather than celebrating the diverse contributions of feminists, black nationalists, gay rights activist, disabled activists, environmentalists, peace people, angry anarchists, hunt sabs, stencil artists, work place organisers, road protestors, tree climbers and ravers.

We could see every person who is prepared to work with us as a potential new recruit rather than respecting that some people might not share our perspective.

We could hijack every project we get invovled with for our own ends and leave behind a trail of resentment.

Best of all, we could do absolutely nothing effective to tear assunder the the oppressive, exploitative and alienating society we live in because we are afraid to act.

The non-aligned/anarchist/anti-capitalist/peace/environmentalist/free party/black bloc/situationist/libertarian communist/gorilla gardening tradition might not be as theoretically coherent as you would like but it has much better developed sense of praxis than you'll ever have.

about china being the unifying factor behind the student rebellion may be valid. didnt john lennon actually read out a chunk of mao on tv ? and its true that the whole scene seemed to lose its way in the late seventies, after mao tse tung died and his followers were ousted by teng hsao ping (thats in the wade-giles rather than the pinyin!)
