One killed in shooting attack at El Al ticket counter in L.A.

Haaretz | 04.07.2002 19:38

One person was killed and two wounded Thursday in a shooting at approximately 10 P.M. (Israel time) at El Al's ticket counter at Los Angeles Airport

The gunman was shot dead by a member of El Al's security personnel.

The two injured in the attack at the Tom Bradley international terminal received medical treatment on the scene.

Initial reports said a man had walked up to the El Al ticket counter and fired a shot at a clerk, then opened fire on other people in the international terminal.

"The sound was distinctive, there were a lot of shots fired then silence and two more shots," a witness said.

CNN reported that FBI agents were on their way to the airport.

Outbound and incoming flights were suspended. The terminal was evacuated and auto traffic from the area halted.

Army Radio reported that reaching the ticket counter for Israel's national carrier was simple, and that there were no security checks beforehand.

The incident, which took place Thursday morning L.A. time, came amid heightened security around the United States as Americans celebrated the first Independence Day holiday since the September 11 suicide hijack attacks on New York and Washington.

Palestinians Killed in Isreali Terror Attack

04.07.2002 21:44

Reports say a local leader of the militant al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades was killed along with a lieutenant in the Palestinian security forces.

Palestinian officials, quoted by the Associated Press news agency, said they suspected Israeli agents of having planted a car bomb. There has been no reaction from Israel.

Terrorism?

05.07.2002 10:02

"The news of the shooting at the El Al ticket counter at Los Angeles International Airport had barely gotten out over the wires before the Israeli government was already characterizing it as a terrorist action – in spite of initial reports that the shooter may have been a disgruntled former employee. This also contradicts the statements of local, state, and federal officials, who say there is no evidence that this was a terrorist operation. "

"Argument between two people that spun out of control; A Mexicana supervisor had overheard the gunman having a heated argument at the El Al counter, apparently involving his documentation. Soon afterward, the shooting started..."

I have stubbed out my joint Rhys, waiting for effects to wear off.

Fishy? No Way!

05.07.2002 10:09

I'm with you Rhys... the situation of the middle east aside (that is a whole different kettle of fish), why is it that in some people's eyes. the palestinians can do no wrong? A man walks into a crowded public building and guns down two people, and of course it is an Israeli/ US conspiracy!?! C'mon, get real man; this gunman was a maniac, regardless of his race, or beliefs...

US officials this morning identified the gunman who shot dead two people at Los Angeles international airport as a 41-year-old Egyptian man who had been living in the US for a decade.
The FBI identified Hesham Mohamed Hadayet, who had been living in a southern California suburb with his wife and child, as the man who yesterday opened fire on a check-in desk of the Israeli national airline, El Al. He was shot dead by an El Al security guard soon after the shooting began.

Hadayet, who also went by the last name Ali, was a legal US resident who worked as a limousine driver, FBI spokesman Matt McLaughlin said.

Authorities were searching a townhouse in Irvine, in Orange County southeast of Los Angeles, late yesterday. The motive remained uncertain and there was no evidence anyone else was involved, Mr McLaughlin said.

"We've never said it's not terrorism. We can't rule that out, but there's nothing to indicate terrorism at this point," he added.

some obvious facts

07.07.2002 16:24

you have an agenda in mind when you go to an airpost ticket line with two pistoles , spare clips loaded, and a knife to boot.

He lived in La with wife....but it is reported that his wife and sister were questioned back in Egypt, so the little lady was not in his bed durring the night before. Fact. No 'conclusion' by me except to pay attention to the supposition there were other facts todrive him, like the marine and us flag he was so incensed about.

P.S. some of us don't condone palestinian violence. We just see it as the control being with Israqel to stop this cycle. And they are NOT doing it, have not tried, are pushing and relying on their longstanding poor victims status. Good will has run out.
