UPDATE:
This is the first of what we hope are regular updates from LARC, in this
case to let everyone know what the latest situation is with the building.
Although we have officially been in occupation of the building since 1st
March 2002, we are still experiencing frustrating delays ironing out
health and safety issues with the council and as such, are still unable
to use the top floor office space at the moment. (By the way, the groups
set to use that space are LARC Admin, London Reclaim the Streets and
Indymedia¹s Offline project, as well as occasional, short-term campaigns
or needs that may arise down the road.) But it¹s business as usual with
the rest of the building for meetings, making banners/artwork etc., and for other events.

There are still many jobs left to do in the meantime and any offers of
help to finish off outstanding work on the building would be great. And
we also need lots of people to get involved in the working groups that
are now required to keep the building up and running. So if you have any
amount of spare time each week, why not put your name down on the work
rota or let us know if you're interested in joining one of the following
groups - these include: LARC general admin, gardening, organising events,
finance, fundraising, etc. These working groups are at an early stage, so
there is plenty of scope for developing them if anyone is interested.

And talking about keeping LARC up and running means we need to bring in
money on a regular basis. There will be bills to pay plus other costs, as
well as maintenance of the building. We have to fork out substantial
amounts for rates each year as well. But we are attempting to reduce
costs where possible and our application to the local council for a
discretionary rates rebate is currently being considered.

One obvious way to help finance the building is by having regular
benefits. These have started to happen already but need a dedicated posse
to make them happen regularly. Any takers??? Donations by LARC users are
another way of raising some funding and any donations would be very
welcome. If anyone has other ideas or suggestions about ways we could
generate income to cover our running costs or even reduce them, please,
please share them with us.

In case you didn¹t know, the building is owned by a company limited by
guarantee, of which there are about 10 directors. The company is set up
in such a way as to prevent the directors from being able to profit from
their position. In fact it is set up in a similar way to a co-op. If
anyone wants to see a copy of the Memorandum and Articles of Association, just let us know.

We aim to start up users¹ meetings in the not too distant future. This
will provide a forum for regular users of the building where decisions
about running LARC will be made. The first is set for the middle of
September (more to come on this later) with a Social afterwards.

If you are interested in helping out with any outstanding building jobs,
or in joining/starting a working group, let us know by contacting LARC.
The number is: 020 7377 9088. Or if you see one of us around just let us know.
