British Anarchism email list

Anarchism.ws | 09.07.2002 10:38

New list for anarchists in Britain, email  BritishAnarchism-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to join

This is an invite to a new mailing list for anarchists in Britain called British anarchism. It has been set up because there was no general anarchist discussion and announcement list for anarchists in England, Scotland and Wales. The list will be semi-moderated to keep out spam and enforce the posting protocol below (which is modelled on the successful  IrishAnarchism@yahoogroups.com list).

The need for the list was identified while constructing the Anarchism in Britain index on the Struggle site. See  http://anarchism.ws/britain.html

The list is starting off with a small group of moderators all of whom have been active anarchists for a decade or more. To join the list
email  BritishAnarchism-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
OR visit  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BritishAnarchism/

-- List posting protocol --

British Anarchism is a discussion list primarily for anarchists active in Britain. Others are welcome to join this list but they should recognise that the protocol below is intended to preserve this list purpose.

1. No person may send more than three posts in any given day to the list.

2. Posts cannot consist of more than 50% quotations from previous posts.

3. Members of political organisations other than anarchist ones are welcome to join this list for discussion but - don't send announcement of your party activities or those of its front groups here. - you are limited to one post per day

4. Do not forward mails from other lists unless you have added an introduction about why they are of interest to this list and proposing some activity around the issue. An exception to this are anarchist events in Britain or if you are an anarchist events/issues that you are involved with in Britain.

5. There is to be no flaming on the list

People who fail to respect this protocol will have their right to automatically post to the list removed. All future posts will be moderated.

How moderation works

Several anarchist activists in Britain are moderators of this list. Any of them may switch someone who sends posts in breach of the protocol to the list to moderated rather then automatic posting rights.

Posts sent to the list from people who are moderated can be approved by any of the lists moderators. If they have not been approved after two days any moderator can reject the post if they send a post to the person outlining the reasons why the post is being rejected. If they have not been approved after one week any moderator may simply delete the post.

Although i disagree with moderating i think this is a good idea.

The anarchists in Britain need to be better organised and have more communication with each other.

As long as those who subscribe have a say on it and the moderating is got rid of i will sign up and tell others about it.

COME ON ANARCHISTS LETS ORGANISE!!!!!!!

Micro$oft?

My, it's oh-so completely original sentiments like this that first caused me to describe myself as an Anarchist. I supose we should all give up communicating with the printed word too because William Caxton once printed a bible in English, thereby causing the continuance of religious oppression.

Do my points of view now mean nothing because I choose to use a Hotmail account, or must I sublimate my own choice to conform to an arbitrary rule-system brought about by someone else's idea of value-judgement? Looks like I've wasted the last fifteen years of my life, then. The last thing Anarchists need is ANOTHER bloody meeting to 'talk and organise' - just go out in your ones and twos and bloody do something, anything - violent or non-violent - then you'll actually have something to talk about, rather than semi-literately arguing about the semantics of our adopted '-ism'. Remember, 'jism' also has an '-ism' but you won't see many banners proclaiming support for it next May Day.

An obvious solution to the moderation problem: If the flames, spam, and 'moderated' material are left up on the forum by simply being moved out of their original location into their own thread (with maybe even a link at the origin to go there), it should keep things happy for everyone. If the many fourteen-year-olds who run their own forums can manage it, I'm sure a few grown-up anarchos can try.

"Do my points of view now mean nothing because I choose to use a Hotmail account,"
- No i never said that (bit of a persecution complex methinks), but your choice to use hotmail does indicate that you either have a lack of understanding about the dodgey business practices of microsoft and it's attempts to monopolise IT technoloy, or that you understand but dont care.

"An obvious solution to the moderation problem: If the flames, spam, and 'moderated' material are left up on the forum by simply being moved out of their original location into their own thread"
- Not if your using yahoo, they dont use the 'thread' system you just get one discussion space which is littered with adverts. That one space will often delay or 'lose' e-mails completely because as with all microsoft products yahoo is shit.

Okay, so what to do if microsoft/yahoo is evil? Which companies do you suggest? Is there a champions league table of evil world domination internet companies with microsoft at the top?

I do feel that microsoft would be at the top of the evil tree.

www.yabbforum.com is not opensource but a nice program for forums,
www.cryptoheaven.com seems OK for e-mail or
www.clara.net as well as www.hushmail.com (none of these are ideal but better than hotmail, any other suggestions please post)

www.gnu.net and the www.apache.org server are good opensource projects or just search on google for linux projects.
i also reproduce a article from the ireland newswire that caught my eye:

Internet Security, Hacking and Indymedia
by Hack Head Tue, Jun 11 2002, 11:15am
Protect Yourself Against Hackers!
The recent posting on Indymedia which dealt with hacking and internet security was interesting to read. I have a keen interest in Internet Security and hacking, probably more a hobby now that anything else. When discussing an issue like this the “SPOOK” factor tends to creep in to peoples mind. Don’t forget that hacking is a Cyber Culture with many aspects to it. It can be great fun so don’t go freaking yourself out about it. And before you go calling me paranoid, freaked out, lefty, or SWP, none of that is applicable to me.
Indymedia Ireland now presents the authorities with a very effective intelligence gathering information network. From the comfort on their offices desks they are able extract information within minutes that would normally take days or months, and cost thousands of pounds if they did it “the old fashion way”. I ask you the question – If the authorities came knocking on your front door looking for personal information from you PC would you give it to them? Answer: No you would not. Hacking is essential this. The main difference is you don’t know they are calling, been in and left. Hacking of ones PC is a civil liberties issue. You have the right to conduct your private, social, and business matters on your PC without intrusion.
I noticed the period preceding the MayDay events saw an unusual amount of intrusions on my PC. Each time I logged onto indymedia Ireland I was hacked with minutes, even seconds. I have been monitoring the IP Address and networks intruding my system from indymedia and a repetition of numbers are appearing. Most of the attacks where “high security” intrusions - simply meaning information retrieval was the purpose.
Education is the key to internet security:
Firewall Software was the biggest selling software for the PC World last year, while Compustore and other leading retailers showed high sales. Strangely enough, as a nation we seem to be clued in to this. Irish Companies both big and small have invested vast sums of money protecting themselves from hackers. If you do not have a certain level of protection, you are a sitting duck. To have a good level of security on your system you will require 4 software programs. (Do a search in www.google.com and you will find links to them. There is free Demo downloads available).

1. Zone Alarm - Firewall Protection against information retrieval
2. Anti-Virus - Stops spy and virus programs
3. Visual Route Tracker – Tracking the IP Address of intruders. From this you can get a huge amount of information about how is hacking you.
4. Private File – This is the ultimate file protection when sending emails or attachments. You can encrypt any files with 8 alphanumeric or 16 Hexadecimal keys. There is a free full version available at  http://www.rits.ie
If you have doubts about what I am saying, just simply install a firewall and an IP tracker, visit indymedia.ie/org/ and watch your firewall pop up window dance like a ballet fairy around your monitor.
Internet security does not have to be a problem, nor should it be. Protect yourself with the latest security software and explore the cyber culture of hacking. Knowledge is power. Have fun and enjoy. SPOOK!
