Ahmed Menguini has been in prison under solitary confinement since his arrest at a demo of the Strasbourg bordercamp on July 24th. His trial is on July 20th. Today, we are going to hand out the following leaflet to launch a campaign. Watch this space for ways to support him / or dress up and come along...

On Wednesday, August 21st, Ahmed Meguini will be in a French court, risking three years in prison for exercising his right of free expression. During a demonstration for freedom of movement in Strasbourg on July 24th, he was arrested, handcuffed, and dragged across the street to a police car. Since then, he has been in prison under solitary confinement.
Based on our experience as a noborder group this summer at the international no-border camp in Strasbourg, we are setting up a temporary noborderZONE by holding a Franco-British panel-picnic at the French Institute.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY
In July 2002, an international noborder camp held in Strasbourg attracted more than 2000 visitors from all over Europe.
We spent ten days in close interaction with a wide range of people: The major of Strasbourg, young musicians from the banlieus, local artists, journalists, French people with Alsacian, central French and north African backgrounds. Even the police joined in at times.
The noborderZONE as a non-profit contribution to the programme of the French Institute aims at helping us to understand our differences and similarities better: To explore the best and the worst of both French and British lifestyles.
FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT
Air France and Eurostar are sponsors of the French Institute. Both companies are involved in the immigration policies of the French resp. British government. An official cultural institution of the French government, the French Institute is predestined to accommodate the contradictions between the pleasures and abominations of traditional French culture.
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
The noborderZONE performance highlights the right to free expression not only in France, but also in the UK - the freedom to express our different cultural backgrounds, our needs to free movement and free communication, our right to be in the streets and in public spaces like the French Institute.
INVITATION
We invite you to join in, have some wine and baguette, and sign the petition for Ahmed. When the charges against him are dropped, we will invite him to come to London and share with us his experience as a French citizen from Paris with a Moroccan background, and enlighten us about the great cultural mix that flourishes in France like everywhere else.
