NATIONAL ANTI-WAR DEMO (28/9)

phats | 28.08.2002 08:31

gonna be a monsta!

A week after the Hunters' march, this has to be huge!
It goes from the Embankment to Hyde Park (out of harm's way) or to anywhere we choose.....
This needs publicizing, in this column as the main Indymedia article section has had fuck all about the upcoming war and cap/anti-cap showdown.
Obviously it's not as important as Titmore woods, but with 240 coaches going from Birmingham alone, it's looking promising.

yes Ive been wondering too why UK.Indymedia doesnt give some kind of prominence to the anti-war mobilization. If we wait until the bombs start falling in quantity it will be too late

Roll out the boycott

28.08.2002 12:28

I fully agree that this demo has to be enormous. We should also kick start an economic boycott campaign against US concerns. Boycotts have become more and more popular in recent years as they are a very effective way of harming the brand image of a target, and lets be honest the biggest brand in the world is the Empire itself.

In addition to well known targets like Koca-Kola, Nike, Gap, Disney etc. there are many others we could attack: orange juice is a major US export to the UK (we could really piss the Bush gang off by encouraging people to switch to orange juice coming from Cuba) as are fresh, tinned and died fruits. California wine, peanuts from Georgia, Tabasco and other hot sauces from Louisiana and elsewhere.

Utilities and services are also a major source of US funds, if your electricity or gas company is US owned (TXU springs to mind) then switch, and, more importantly let them know why you switched.

The Bush gang has significantly altered its policy over steel tariffs because of the threat of retaliatory sanctions by the EU that would hurt other US business interests. In the absense of EU bottle to undertake a sanctions policy in the event of a US attack on Iraq then we should take up a vigorous boycott campaign. The campaign should stay in place until the US agrees to renounce its 'might is right' doctrine, and agrees to respect and abide by international law - especially the Geneva Convention.

Agreed

Lets build this one. We have to show them. And lets have some discussion. No politely marching to the park. And no mindless destruction either. (though destruction has it's place. It's the mindless bity I object to)

An Iraqi mother holding her murdered child in her arms asks you what you did to try and prevent this war, to prevent all wars. What do you tell her? I went for a stroll to the park? Smashed Mcdonalds windows?

Boycott?

28.08.2002 12:54

"The campaign should stay in place until the US agrees to renounce its 'might is right' doctrine, and agrees to respect and abide by international law - especially the Geneva Convention"

Well, thats a boycott forever then. And a boycott of just about everything. You cannot shop your way to freedom. Never.

Capitalism is war. Capitalism cannot be reformed. Capitalism is very adaptable.

Our resistance must also be adaptable. Our resistance must not stop at reform. Our resistance must be war.

These wars will continue, the oppression will continue, state and capital will continue to evolve into more effective machines of exploitation and violence, until we destroy them.

Resisting this war has to be a starting point, not an end in itself. Or else history will keep repeating itself until the planet just gives up and dies.

Fight the power. No war but the class war.

direct action as well as demo

28.08.2002 13:17

We need to be urgently discussing and planning ways to stop this war before the bombs drop. Marching up and down streets important though it is is not going to be enough to stop Dr strangelove bush, lap dog blair, and their bunch of nutters. We need to seriously start contemplating confrontational direct action tactics such as blockades, strikes, mass sit down protests and blockades of army bases, and government buildings etc, this and similar action is in my opinion the only way were going to stop these mad bastards, not boring marches to trafalgar square and hyde park.

I agree

28.08.2002 15:07

And that's why there'll be an anticapitalist bloc on the demonstration.

Meet up 12noon at Cleopatra's needle, under the Anticapitalist Bloc banner.

Only direct action can stop this war!

Right place for Civil Disobidience

28.08.2002 15:19

The 'march to the park' won't achieve much ON ITS OWN.

I'll still be there though. its important to show the Poodle how many people feel VERY stongly about this war.

It will also keep up the momentum that is winning the argument in the court of public opinion.

Civil Disobience on the march causing disruption to Joe Public will simply harm our efforts to win the argument.

Ditto Smashing the Windows @ McD's (if it were Vickers i'd be tempted, but it ain't gonna achieve much innit?).

BUT, if the Americans (& possibly the Poodle) follow through on theire threats, thats the time to bring out the Civil Disobidence weapon, to disrupt and haress the WAR effort (not Joe Public).

Then we will have the public behind us.

please don't smash windows

28.08.2002 16:47

Not because it's 'naughty' but because it's bad tactics, it'll put folk off.

Apart from anything else, I reckon any violence of any sort on this demo will get blamed on Muslims, as part of the propaganda war against them.

STOP THE WAR COALITION

Anti-war (the second one)

28.08.2002 17:18

Anti-war, you're a complete twat.

Who said they were going to go and break windows?
You've been reading too much of the Sun...

And what if anyone did? At least then people would notice that there's an antiwar movement! And not only that, but an antiwar movement that's actually serious about stopping the war - rather than just wanting a nice walk to Hyde Park.

Do you really think a war by the most powerful nations on Earth is going to be stopped by a bunch of students waving placards? If you do I think it's about time you wake up and smell the genocide...

How to really stop the war

28.08.2002 18:12

Peusade the TUC to call for a general strike.
Block off petrol depots, power stations, motorways, etc.
Disrupt communications to the City of London.
Block off entrances to Downing Street and Parliement.

Just a few suggestions, but one thing is certain, just waving placards and chanting slogans in Hyde Park will NOT STOP ANYTHING.
