Phone masts

Tenants on Hawksley court inform us that Orange intend to place yet more masts on Carlisle House on Hawksley Court estate within one week. The locals stopped the previous attempt two years ago. We are in the same position all over again and require HELP to peacefully block the access . We have been given a target date of Sept 16 but it is very likely that the attempt will fall a few days before or after.

The tenants are concerned about the impact on their children of increased radiation associated with the masts.

They have a meeting on 9 September at 8pm at Hawksley Court Community Hall, Albion Road.

Phone 0207 502 9192 for more details.

Latest news from Hackney Trades Union Council

Hackney TUC will be meeting on Wednesday 11 September from 7.30 at the Marcon community hall (junction of Marcon Place and Amhurst Road). This is an open meeting for trade unionists who either live or work in the borough.

Guest speakers include
Bob Tennant, Secretary to the Greater London Association of Trades Union Councils
Andre Joseph, Secretary of the Hackney Action for Racial Equality
As well as a speaker from the Fire Brigade's Union

The meeting will end at 9pm and it is anticipated that we will adjourn to a local bar to engage in a less formal discussion.

Unison seeks assistance on Monday 9 and Friday 16 September!

We have been asked to circulate the following from Hackney Unison

Hackney Council to recruit strike breakers
Max Caller; seeks to influence election by deferring union busting operation

Hackney Library workers have been in dispute for nearly a year over the council's refusal to pay the nationally agreed rate for working Saturdays. The council has recently advertised in a attempt to recruit a strike breaking workforce to take our members jobs on Saturdays. Our calculations are that it will be more expensive to pay sessional staff than it is for existing workers to be paid at the nationally agreed rate. This is a union busting operation co-ordinated by a Labour council. Last year they dismissed Unison members and re-instated them with lower terms and conditions. Jules Pipe has boasted that he will not engage with Unison officers because he does not like their politics!

Recruitment will take place at Hommerton Library and Unison are calling for supporters to protest from 8.45am on Monday 9 September and on Friday 13 September.

Max Caller seeks to influence election by deferring union busting operation

Meanwhile we have received evidence of political manipulation by Max Caller (the returning officer for the Mayoral election) which is aimed to assist Jules Pipe's candidacy for Mayor. The council had planned to begin the scabbing operation in the first week in October, but a leaked memo explains that it will be delayed until after the mayoral election.

Extract from Max Caller to Ian Hook dated 3 September 2002

Re Hackney Libraries new pattern of working update

I have discussed Joan's email dated 30 August with the leader, we have agreed that it would be sensible to defer the opening on Saturdays until after the mayoral election to prevent unnecessary industrial action during the election campaign.

The returning officer appears to be making council policy on the basis of the impact it will have on the Labour leaders election prospects! This cannot be right.
