Without giving out his details, the head of the Department of Cyber Crime of the Greek Police contacted the editorial team of Athens Indymedia:
on Saturday, September 28, a pretty weird message came to the imc-athens-contact mailing list (a rapid translation of the messages follows):
Date: Sat, 28 Sep 2002 13:13:37 +0300
From: Sfakianakis
To: imc-athens-contact@lists.indymedia.org
Subject: [Imc-athens-contact] (no subject)
HELLO..
CONGRATULATIONS FOR YOUR WEB SITE...
I ENTERED IT AFTER A SEARCH ...BUT IT IS FANTASTIC (watch out, this part didnt make sense- but it is not a translation error, just the fact that the cop seems to have some kind of communication problems :-) ),,
I AM WORKING ON INTERNET,, AND I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE YOU SOME SUGGESTIONS, IF YOU WANT..
MANOS FANARIWTHS
What was weird about the message was that the name at the "from" field (Sfakianakis) was different from the name he signed with (FANARIWTHS). A member of the IMC Athens editorial team, without suspecting anything, replies to him a few hours later:
Date: Sat, 28 Sep 2002 19:20:19 +0300
To: Sfakianakis ,
imc-athens-contact@lists.indymedia.org
Subject: Re: [Imc-athens-contact] (no subject)
Hello Mano.
My name is Michalis and I, as well, participate in the group that runs this site. If you are in Athens, you can come and meet us. We meet every Sunday at 7, at the Autonomous Haunt. If you are not in Athens, we can contact you through e-mail at a first stage and later on through the mailing lists of IMC Athens.
On the next day, Manos (the cop) answered to Michalis in person:
Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 20:01:45 +0300
From: Sfakianakis
Subject: Re: [Imc-athens-contact] (no subject)

manos.
Manos Sfakianakis is an officer of the Greek Police, head of the Department of Cyber Crime. You can gain more info about this department's action, in this officer's own words, at older issues of newspapers Eleutherotipia (3/12/2000) and NEA (7/7/2001).
It was confirmed by two absolutely confident sources (in order for us to exclude the case of a simple synonimity) that officer Sfakianakis is the owner of the email address from which both the emails above were sent from.
Of course, the reason for which Sfakianakis attempted to contact Athens Indymedia and learn the phone numbers of the editorial team, remains unknown. It is, though, another sign of the climate which is attempted to be created by some mass media against Indymedia
