You are invited to Stop Our City - Stop the War: let's hear you ideas...
by k 8:01pm Sat Oct 5 '02 (Modified on 2:38pm Sun Oct 6 '02)
The majority of people in this country oppose war. Yet their views are being ignored by the government and marginalised by the media. About 400,000 people turned out in London last weekend to show their opposition to the impending war on Iraq. On 31st October people will be coming together to take direct action across the nation, to demonstrate our continued opposition. Let's make our voices heard in Bristol and beyond...
The following text is from the Stop the War website:
"George Bush and Tony Blair are determined to attack Iraq. It will not be a war for democracy — it will be a war to control the oil-rich and strategically vital Middle East. It will not be a war to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, because Iraq does not possess such weapons.
The majority of people in this country oppose war. Yet their views are being ignored by the government and marginalised by the media.
There will be no vote on war in parliament and only public outcry forced Tony Blair to allow even a “consultative” meeting of the House of Commons.
George Bush and Tony Blair are determined to attack Iraq, but they have a problem. Us. The anti-war movement is the great democratic movement in this country. We ... can force the government to stop the carnage and bloodshed that now threatens peace in the Middle East.
We now have to move from words to deeds. We have to move from demonstrations to direct action."

Day Of Action: 31st October
by James Venables 2:38pm Sun Oct 6 '02
The National Day Of Action is intended as a day for autonomous actions, just as much as it is a day for Bristol-Stop-The-War to organise events on behalf of others.
Although the organisers within Bristol-Stop-The-War are happy to continue organising events, we cannot claim that the Anti-War Movement in Bristol is truly up & running until autonomous actions are just as visible & ongoing.
We haven't yet decided on Bristol events for the Day Of Action, but a demonstration at the Bristol Peace Vigil will be a part of it. Please converge at the Peace Vigil @ 5:30pm on Thursday 31st October. (Opposite the Hippodrome)
Depending on numbers which turn out, this will either be a Stop The Traffic procession up Park St, or a Stop The City Demo in the City Centre. Please start spreading the word.
