Bias on Question time during an important time

Bias on Question time during an important time

If anyone watched Question Time tonight they may have noticed that for a crucial programme which would inevitably focus on the F/F's strike and at the height of an eight day stoppage, the panel was clearly slanted towards those who are opposed to the strike. Never, have I seen such a biased and right wing panel: the panel read like a roll call of the bad: Peter Mandelson, , the mad: ,the Mail rag writer, Melanie Philips, the Tory, Teresa May and the 'sitting on the fence', nice guy, Lib Dem, Simon Hughes. Where was Mark Thomas, Monbiot, Hilary Wainwright, Maggie Clarke, etc?..

The audience was just as bad, despite over 40% + of people still supporting the strike, the loaded audience ensured that the 'hurrahs' for Mandelson et al's comments echoed much more loudly than that of the cheers for Andy Gilchrist. The fire-fighters leader unfortunately had to struggle to challenge the panels attack and respond to a baying audience, with only limited success. The firefighters are known to use Question Time as a key indicator of public support and the onslaught from the panel and audience nd even the text mesages will not have helped morale at all. IMO, this is a dirty media war and the f/f leadership have to become much more media savvy, the Rally/Demo next Saturday should help begin this process.

Question Time Bias

29.11.2002 01:04

It's not just this week, it appears to me that every week the panel is dominated by panelists with right wing views.

And it's not just the panel, the audience is predominantly right wing too, with the loudest applause for those panelists advocating War on Iraq and demonising the Firefighters. Also did you know that when you apply online for tickets to attend Question Time, you're asked if you're a member of a political party and if so which one.

That woman on the panel, can't remember her name, but she was really frightening with her extreme right wing views.

The BBC truly stands for the Blair Broadcasting Corporation.

what's bias?

Did it ever occur to you that a large majority of people in this country have rightwing views?

representing the British people

29.11.2002 11:52

I've never heard such bullshit. Yes this particular programme was right wing slanted, but Question Time has clearly been a left leaning programme in the past. The general British public clearly seem to hold right of centre views which was well represented on last nights programme. This is why new labour got in and still remain - cos everyone really knows that behind the facade, they are a right of centre party.

diverse opinions

Rubbish. Right-wingers always lay claim to a right-wing 'silent majority'.

Truth is more complex. Believe it or not, 'the masses' are not all of one view, in fact at all levels and in all areas of society there are conflicting views. In every home, workplace and community, some people hold left-wing views, some hold right-wing views, and most hold a confused mixture of both.

As to Question Time, the BBC aren't entirely to blame for the bias of the panel. Traditionally they've maintained political balance by including reps from all major parties. Trouble is, now that Labour is New Labour, all three main parties are uncomfortable with unions and utterly oppose workers fighting back. The BBC will inevitably reflect this 'Westminster consensus'.

BBC is the establishment

29.11.2002 13:49

What did you expect from the BBC? A May Day conference? The BBC has never been a neutral force in political debate, so there's not much point in appealing to it. Does it matter if the audience is like the rest of the British public, ie deeply right-wing and reactionary? The problem is British attitudes, not Question Time.

''balance'' as the greater bias

29.11.2002 14:12

can we forget this stuff about the BBC being biased ? its pointless, because what the beeb does is to expound @balance@ where all @extremes@ are smoothed out into a kind of equilibrium, centering around the establishment in general. complaining about 'bias' merely plays into the hands of the bbc, who pride themselves on their conceit...

chicken or the egg...

29.11.2002 14:16

even if the majority of people do hold centre right to right wing views, this doesn't mean anything cos all the mainstream media is owned by right wing big business so that is the only angle that most people get their news from...
i think though, that people are beginning to see thru it...
the fact that a majority of people oppose the war despite not one newspaper opposing it and the fact that support for the firefighters is about 50-50 despite not one newspaper supporting the stike is a very good sign for politics in britain...
