Harlequin= a cover thats now worn threadbare
"Harlequin"= n. pantomime character, in tight spangled dress, with visor and magic wand: a buffoon: a breed of small spotted dog- v.i. to play the harlequin (fm old French 'hellequin' a devil in medieval legend)
