UNITED AGAINST STATES

UNITED AGAINST STATES

AS citizens, we have little power to prevent our leaders going to war against Iraq.

We only have the vote, and that only once every four or five years. And the politicians know that most elections are about the economy, not their idiotic foreign adventures.

But we are also consumers, and in the run-up to war a Boycott America campaign has been suggested. These principles could provide some guidance:

- DO not go to the United States as a tourist. Stay at home and see what a much finer country ours is.

- DO not buy or drink American wine, beer or spirits. Give me Tetley's any day.

- DO not eat American food. Stay away from McDonald's and all the other fast-food outlets.

- DO not pay to watch American films. They are full of noise, foul language and violence.

- DO not buy American newspapers or magazines.

- DO not use Americanisms. Instead of "Hi!" let's go back to saying "Good morning." No more "Yeah!" A "yes" will suffice.

- DO not wear American clothes. Throw the baseball cap in the dustbin (not, emphatically not, the trash can).

- DO not fly American airlines anywhere. It's probably safer not to.

- DO not smoke American cigarettes. They are bigger killers than al-Qaeda.

- DO not, above all, believe the lies that will spew out of the Anglo-American spin machine once the conflict gets under way.

- IF we try to live by these simple precepts, perhaps one day the United States will be forced to mend its violent, imperial ways.

Direct action, direct from Tunbridge Wells:

-DO not go to the United States as a tourist. Stay at home and see what a much finer country ours is.

- DO not use Americanisms. Instead of "Hi!" let's go back to saying "Good morning." No more "Yeah!" A "yes" will suffice.

God preserve us, the fellow's a fool indeed...

Please explain..

If we all stop smoking american cigarettes, the yanks will let Saddam continue his megalomanic project of ethnic cleansing in the Middle East? If we, by passive acceptance, display a feeble minded support for Saddam´s totalitarian regime and Iraq expansionism we can all go to the Middle East for a nice holiday instead of going to Florida?
I wish you good luck on your efforts of trying to guide us all to a better future, some day you might succed - as a MP of Iraq or something.

If I had any faith that the US invasion of Iraq had anything to do with human rights, the safety of the Iraqi people, democracy or peace, then I would agree with you.

Unfortunately by all accounts they are going in, in order to reap the profits of Iraq's oil reserves. They will install a new leader not much different from Saddam except that he will do what Bush tells him to.

Look at Saudi Arabia, an equally repressive regime, but an ally. Why don't we invade them? Because they do what we want and we couldn't give a toss about humanitarian issues.

As An American....

As an American, I absolutely agree! You, like us, are trapped by a war-mongering government; put as much pressure as you can on Blair and the labor party. If ONLY ONE country vetos this war, Bush (really Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle & Cohen)stands alone. The American public, in poll after poll, do not want to go to war alone. Germany? France? There's got to be at least ONE country that's not bullied into this war.

All the above and...

I vote for all the above, and maybe most importantly, dis-invest from the American Stock Market. The American stock market is propped-up by foreign investors. If a campaign could be succssfully be mounted to dis-invest from the American stock market, it would crash. Are Churches and Universities invested in this market? Should they be?
