Yomango statement

jab | 21.12.2002 19:56

Barcelona, December 20th. As part of the solidarity actions for Argentine, Yomango performed a Tango show in a main supermarket in Barcelona, then put the liberated champaign to good use the next day. Here is a translation of their statement:

Yomango statement

Barcelona, December 20th

Statement from the Yomango Corporation about the Tango exhibition in the supermarket “Champion” in Las Ramblas: Happy Christmas, Argentina!

Yomango realised this tango exhibition tonight in a branch of the Carrefour multi-national in the center of Barcelona. The dancers interpreted a choreography that allowed them to "discretely and festively" take control of a few bottles of champagne to celebrate the anniversary of the Argentine struggle.

The toast will take place on December 21st at the location of a Spanish multinational related to the Argentine crisis. We want to celebrate the mass organising in Argentina, a country-mirror in which we are watching ourselves and from which we are learning new forms of mobilisation. Today, it is a year since the struggle began - the struggle of a people who have used all their creativity in search of self-organised solutions against a devastating economic crisis.

These products (12 bottles) are the ONLY ones that we liberated from the heavy act of purchase, at least for today, the day of Yomango criminal action. (Because Yomango is a daily act, a way of live that is always with you to make your life much better.)
The action was carefully prepared to ensure that everything would happen in a festive way. To achieve that goal, we have been working hard on numerous Yomango dinners during the last few months. We want to offer the best thing, to amuse ourselves and to share with everybody the fact that supermarkets can be perfect everyday scenarios to develop our creativity to overcome barcode hypnosis and superseed the ultracodified act of filling the trolley and paying.

In this spectacular exhibition, we presented our bandoneones or "mangoneones", instruments that produce celestial sounds when they open the content for which they have been created; or the knapsack-botellero: from the supermarket to the table with total elegance. This is the result of the hard work of our department of investigation and products. I+D "from below", created by the users in a collaborative working process. "Designed with us" is a program which makes sure that the designer elites don’t define our interaction with the products.

Red Global Argentina-Tango, connections of the action:

- Yomango forms part of a network of more than x countries worldwide: The Global Network Argentina-Tango. At the international level, there have been calls for two days of Global action or Social Disobedience on 20-21 December. They have been prepared at international encountes of groups and social movements who take part in the anticapitalist movement. (For example the meeting of the NoBorder network (www.noborder.org) at Strasbourg in July 2002, the European meeting of the Acción Global de los Pueblos (AGP), in Leiden, September 2002, or in the alternative spaces of the European Social Forum, Florence, November 2002.)

On the other hand, today marks the anniversary of the day when Argentine ex-president Fernando de la Rúa left the Casa Rosada, while more than a million Argentineans were out in the streets, banging casseroles and shouting: "Que se vayan todos!” (They must all go!) These two events, the decentralized but coordinated performance of the international anticapitalist movement, and the anniversary of the beginning of the Argentine revolt have given rise to actions like the Yomango-Tango. Yomango is a brand, a versatile and dangerous lifestyle that adapts to the rhythm of everyday life as much as to the one of the people’s revolt in argentina.
During today and tomorrow, many things are happening in many countries of the world. Some of the actions have something to do with Yomango...
