200,000 Thousand People Converge in San Francisco against US War On Iraq

SF-Indymedia | 19.01.2003 19:35

A massive anti-war protest happened today in downtown SF calling for no war on Iraq. The crowd stretched continuously from the foot of Market St. and filled the Civic Center to capacity.

Later in the afternoon, one thousand people joined a radical anti-capitalist breakaway march and militantly marched through the financial center smashing windows and graffitting the SF Chronicle, British Consulate, CitiCorp, the INS building, Starbucks, and Victoria's Secret. There were two confirmed arrests. One protester said, "The anti-globalization movement may be dead, but the anti-capitalist movement is alive and well."

4:09 The breakaway marchers ran down sixth st. to get away from the police. They came to the SF Chronicle building. One bunch held off the cops at one end of the block, one bunch did the same at the other, while the ones in the center graffited the Chron building. People are now headed back down Market St, toward Embarcadero, with the cops behind them.
