Anti-War video screenings in South West

Lifecycles | 07.02.2003 00:29

Below is the programme of films we showed at two recent video screenings we organised in Totnes and Plymouth. The films come from a variety of sources such as Undercurrents, Real 2 Reel, Guerilla News Network, Voices in the Wilderness etc. If people are interested in doing public screenings we can supply these films on VCD/MPG1 or PAL VHS....

Tonight's Programme

The screening this evening has a strong anti-war theme. It consists mostly of recent short films taken at protests and actions against the war. We hope to encourage people to journey to London for the events on the 14th and the big demo in the 15th. We also hope that these videos will inspire people to take part in other forms of resistance against the war machine.

Lord Of The Rings - Fellowship of the Ring of Freetrade [6'] Okay, so this first one is not really about war - or is it?

Honey I Shrunk The World Trade Center [3' 15"] Rambo culture, rouge states and the 'war on terrorism'.

GNN War Conspiracy [4"16"] Guerrilla News Network takes a look back at some the lessons of history.

Arms Fairies -11th September 2001 [1' 35"] Attempts to shut down Europe's biggest arms fair in London's Docklands were somewhat overshadowed by events in the USA. The event is taking place again this year - see www.dsei.org

With This Hammer [8'] This moving music video accompanies a song by British protest folk band Seize The Day (finalist in the Radio 3 Listeners World Music Awards) and tells of the disarming of a hawk jet bound for East Timor.

Faslane Big Blockade [6'] The home of Britain's nuclear deterrent, Faslane, is the target of regular direct action.

Scrap Trident [3' 45"] Hundreds take to the streets in one of a number of demonstrations against the refitting of the Trident submarines taking place in Devonport Naval Dockyards.

The Nuclear Family [6' 15"] Plymouth's own nuclear family and their views on jobs versus health. This is NOT a spoof.

Try Denting It [5'] Trident Ploughshares disarmament camp in Plymouth last November.

Blockade Blues [1' 30"] A failed attempt to block Camelshead gate at Devonport dockyard.

Filton Abbeywood [2' 30"] On the outskirts of Bristol activists attempt to highlight the major role of the MoD in the supply of munitions containing depleted uranium.

Stop This Bloody War [5' 10"] The first of the big demos in London to protest against the war on terrorism, which at the time meant an attack on Afghanistan.

Greetings from Missile Street [40'] Showing the effects of sanctions on Iraq.

Don't Attack Iraq - Undercurrents [4' 45"] The second big anti-war demo attracted around 400,000 people to London to make it clear that any UK involvement in a war against Iraq would not reflect the wishes of the people.

Don't Attack Iraq [2' 30"] Another view of the big demo.

Graffiti Night Out [1'] Brief look at effective DIY media. See www.undercurrents.org

US Student Demo NY [5' 20"] A refreshing piece showing that even in the US there is far from overwhelming support for military action against Iraq.

Chomsky on the peace movement [6'] During an interview in London late last year, Noam Chomsky had a few words to say on the current peace movement and that of the Vietnam period.

Fairford 1 [2' 30"] USAF Fairford, one of the largest airbases in the UK is visited by UNofficial weapons inspectors wishing to enter the base to inspect the weapons of mass destruction based there. The inspectors are refused entry but a couple of dozen make it through the 'back door'. www.gwi.org.uk

Fairford 2 [5' 45"] The UNofficial weapons inspectors return to Fairford with around 1,500 people in all. Despite further non-cooperation by the base personnel, around 30 to 40 weapons inspectors make it into the base.

Zapatista military base occupation [6] People power in action in this amazing film from Mexico.

Woomera - Holiday Camp [18 minute edit] Asylum and war are inextricably linked. This moving film is about actions at a detention centre in Australia last summer. Group 4 security run similar detention centres in the UK.

Soup Kitchen [4'40"] Changes in the law and the less than warm welcome for asylum seekers in the UK.

State of the Union Address 2003 [1'30"] and God Bless America [1' 30"]

S11 Redux [11'] Aptly subtitled 'Channel Surfing the Apocalypse' - enjoy.

Recent resistance

The past few weeks have seen an escalation of anti-war demonstrations around the world. On Saturday 25th Jan there were protests in Genoa, Istanbul, Greece and, closer to home, Norwich was brought to a standstill. There were also protests in Edinburgh and Colchester.

 Over 200 protesters marched on RAF St Athans, in Wales and demanded to search for weapons of mass destruction www.icwi.org
 1500 people took part in a demonstration on 26 Jan 2003 at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and over thirty people managed to get into the base www.gwi.org.uk . On Monday the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior, along with other boats, entered Marchwood Military port in Southampton and blocked the departure of UK military supply vessels heading for Iraq.
 On the 28th Trident Ploughshares activists locked themselves to the gates of Rolls Royce in Derby and prevented workers getting to work. The factory produces nuclear fuel components for Trident submarines. 0845 4588366 www.tridentploughshares.org
 On the 29th a peace activist was arrested at Shannon airport, Ireland, after she was found causing damage to an American military plane parked there. Although she didn’t manage to disarm the plane, she did manage to cause 500,000 Euros worth of damage.
 There were massive anti-war demonstrations across the world on Saturday 18th Jan from Turkey to Pakistan to Japan to Antarctica! The biggest were in Washington DC, with 300,000 people, and in San Francisco with 200,000. In the UK 2000 people travelled to Dublin and on to Shannon airport to protest at the military use of the airport and to oppose the war. A permanent peace camp has now been set up outside the airport. www.shannonpeacecamp.org
 Also on the 18th, 70 people were nicked blockading the Northwood Military HQ. Five protesters locked arms into a giant pair of purple Y-fronts decorated with a “War is pants” slogan.

Some coming events...
 ‘No War for Oil’, Tuesday 4th Feb. Call for protests at UK petrol stations - support the day of action with leafleting, vigils, street theatre, and other nonviolent direct action. If you organise a protest send details to  info@risingtide.org.uk and to the action page of the Target Oil Coalition website www.targetoil.com www.risingtide.org.uk
 Hands off Iraq, a morning of speakers, discussion, videos, banner making and children’s activities. Sat 8th Feb, Brighthelm Centre, North Road, Brighton 9.30am-1pm.
 THE BIG ONE - 15th FEB LONDON www.stopwar.org.uk 0207 053 2155
 Foil The Base - Direct action at Menwith Hill, 22nd March. www.now-peace.org.uk 07905 913 139

The millions showing their opposition to war have helped to change the political climate and may have delayed the next act of state-sanctioned mass murder in the ongoing Gulf war and the battle for the world's dwindling resources. If you want to get involved in actively opposing the proposed 'new' war on Iraq then contact a local group or set up your own. Speak to us and we'll see if we can provide you with contacts.
