Gothenberg - prisioner hunger strike

imc | 12.02.2003 12:06

A 32-year-old at the Skänninge Prison, sentenced for riots during the
EU-summit in June 2001 in Göteborg (Gothenburg-Sweden), is now on his 20th day of hunger-strike. He is convicted on extremely contradictory testimonies from two police witnesses. Photographic evidence that could have saved the 32-year-old from being wrongfully convicted was probably destroyed while in police "safe-keeping".

He is treated ruthlessly by the management of the prison. Because of his condition he wanted to be put on sick-list but the management refused and put him in a cold cell (10 degrees Celsius) for 5 to 7 hours both on last Thursday and Friday. He has not received any medical attention.

Yet another 9 activists in Sweden, sentenced for Gotheborg riots, did a 24h hunger-strike last Saturday, a symbol of solidarity with the 32-year-old prisoner.

Last Saturday 11 a.m a manifestation in support of the hunger-strike took place in Stockholm.

* LEGAL OVERVIEW
At this moment there are 13 people held in jail after the summit in
Gothenburg. About 10 have already finished their sentence, while around 20 more people are waiting to start their sentence.
About 10 -15 have received sentences different than prison (mostly
becuase they were under 18 years old). 20 people have not had their first trial yet, or have appealed to higher court.

In total 71 persons have been prosecuted after the summit in Gothenburg 2001.

On the other side, there are currently two investigations about the cops going on. One involves the highest policeofficer, HÃ¥kan Jaldung, and the other one is about the cops who shot the demonstrators (it's the third investigation - the first two ended into nothing). A couple of months ago there was a trial against the cops who attacked the Schillerska school on saturday evening, but they were found not guilty.

Also, there was a big goverment inquiry about gbg2001, which finished in january. In some ways it is interesting, but the only tangible conclusions are to give more power to the police, and to introduce repressive measures (like, for example, to forbid to cover faces). The interesting part of the inquiry is that it states that cops dressed as demonstrators were carrying stones during the riots. And since some of the convicted demonstrators were sentenced to about half a year of prison for this reason, 17 cops have been reported to the police.
