Students Sleep In Against War

Students from SOAS, University of London, will take over part of their building on Friday night with blessing from university management and the head of the School as part of ongoing protests against the impending war on Iraq.

The SOAS Stop the War group is part of the widespread democratic protest sweeping across this country and the world against the war-mongering of the US and the UK Governments. War on Iraq using any pretext has become the chief priority of the British Government and complete denial of majority public opinion on the subject its chief characteristic .It has therefore become necessary for ordinary people to make themselves heard by acting directly against a Government bent on fomenting War.

The SOAS Stop the War Group has decided to contribute to this atmosphere of public opposition by hosting anti-war events and facilitating the stay of anti-war activists on the SOAS premises on Feb 14.

This is an organic response which has emerged from the very large anti-war movement inside the School. The SOAS Stop the War Group appreciates the fact that anti-war opinion has become a point of unity within the SOAS community. This is reflected in Principal Colin Bundy's statement of support for an Anti-War Day School held on October 12th 2002 and the SOAS Students Union's motion passed on October 10th 2002 in support of the work done by the SOAS STW Group ,the National Stop the War Coalition and opposition to any attack on Iraq.

The purpose of the anti-war action on February 14 is two-fold.

The SOAS Stop the War Group wishes to show practical solidarity to all those who are coming to attend the National Rally on February 15. As a Central London building, SOAS is ideally located to fulfil the function of a night-shelter for those arriving from far away.

The second aim of the mobilization on February 14 is to reiterate a message from the larger society to the Blair Government. Students alongside other sections of the population are not going to tolerate any attack on Iraq. The Government will not be allowed to invade and murder in the name of ordinary people. The mobilization at SOAS is a reflection of direct action against war which is growing in this country as a social movement. The mood it conveys will not go away after what promises to be the biggest anti-war demonstration in UK on February 15 has taken place. It will remain and continue to grow and haunt the Government until it is forced to abandon its decision to attack Iraq. This is a taste of things to come.
