FARC gives empire a black eye. U.S. responds with threats and more lies

Georgie Patrick | 23.02.2003 13:20

Will this be the excuse U.S. imperialism has been waiting for to directly intervene in Colombia's class war between a local mass based movement comprising 2 strong guerilla armies, a militant trade union movement, radical peasant organisations and the fascist paramilitary state?

US considers Colombian rescue mission

By Jeremy McDermott, The Scotsman, 22 Feb 2003

AFTER the murder of a CIA operative and a Colombian intelligence official by guerrillas, the United States is considering a rescue mission to free three other CIA contractors in rebel hands.

"They had shots to the back of the head that show they were assassinated in cold blood," said the US president, George Bush, in an interview with Telemundo Television.

"They [Colombian rebels] are ruthless killers and deserve to be treated as such. We are sharing intelligence and are co-ordinating the movements of troops in the jungle to try and rescue these three people."

The "ruthless killers" are the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the most powerful of Colombia's warring factions and long on the US terrorism list.

They acted quickly when a US government plane on an intelligence mission crash landed in the southern province of Caqueta, one of their strongholds. Two of the five tried to resist kidnapping by the rebels and were executed, according to witnesses. The remainder disappeared with their captives into the jungle.

"I don't think there's any question that this precipitous action by the FARC is going to meet with very strong retaliation," said Tom Davis, a member of a visiting congressional delegation.

The US ambassador to Colombia, Anne Patterson, has made a recommendation to Mr Bush on action to be taken. She refused to comment but another member of the congressional delegation, James Moran, said it was "major and appropriate".

A massive search operation for the three men has been conducted, so far fruitlessly. Yesterday army helicopters flew over the area dropping leaflets offering a £250,000 reward for information on the whereabouts of the missing Americans, a fortune in a country where most live on less than £100 a month.

But the FARC has eluded the best efforts of the security forces and will be keen to keep its prize hostages.

The US embassy has refused to comment officially on the role of the captured Americans, but sources said they were part of the Office of Regional Administration, believed to be a CIA front.

The FARC has long been looking for a way to pressure the US government over its involvement in the country's bloody 39-year civil conflict and has vowed to fight "Yankee imperialism".

Colombia is the third largest recipient of US military aid after Israel and Egypt, receiving more than £300 million a year, including training by 70 US special forces troops in the front-line province of Arauca.

But under congressional restrictions the estimated 400 US troops in the country are forbidden, to engage in combat.

Still, military sources have indicated that special forces troops could be sent into the country under a different mandate and effect a rescue.

Why are you supporting the FARC?

23.02.2003 14:33

They make their money out of drug trafficking, they routinely kidnap and hold people to ransom as another way of raising money, and have committed coutless other autrocites over the years.

Yes the Colombian government has done these thing too, but an emeny's emeny isn't necessarly a friend, and the FARC should be stongly condemmed, not supported, for all the bloodshed it has caused to the ordinary people of Colombia.

That was a lie

24.02.2003 01:30

The FARC are not a drug trafficking organisation, this is simply a lie promoted to justify the intervention and war against them. The FARC, National Liberation Army (ELN) and People's Liberation Army (EPL) are legitimate liberation organisations. Yes, they do detain people who have money and have not paid their taxes and that is how they fund themselves. The government calls this kidnapping but it is a form of imprisonment. Why shouldn't the people and companies that made their money through exploitation be made to contribute to the liberation struggle?

They target innocent people

24.02.2003 12:51

The FARC targets innocent people, for ransom, and they do not hesitate to kill if these ransoms are not met. The crime of their victims? To be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This 'legitimate orginastion' terrorises civillians, and is not better than the Government, who some may also consider 'legitimate'. If you are against the 'War on Terror' it doesn't mean you have to support Al-Queda or Saddam, if you are against the war in Colombia, you don't have to support these glorified drugs barons either, and if you really care about the people of Colombia (rather than your twisted, so-called 'socialist' views), you wouldn't.

Thomas dont take it so personal, there is nothing wrong with targeting rich people. And I would appreciate if you keep your prejudice against those supporting liberation movements to yourself please. No need to lie again thank you very much.

How many more times?

24.02.2003 14:48

THE FARC IS NOT A LIBERATION MOVEMENT!!!

Like Al-Queda is not a liberation movement, like the Chinese government is not a liberation movement, and the government of the former Soviet Union was not a liberation movement.

What the FARC really are is a bunch of evil thugs who threatens anyone within their jurisdiction who doesn't totally agree with them with violence and repression.

I wish people would wake up and realise that, and not slip into a "govement bad, so all that is against the governemt good" mentality.

and by the way, I don't like being accused of lying.
Especially when you are spouting lies of your own.

What legitimacy?

24.02.2003 16:37

Where does FARC receive its legitimacy from? Certainly not the village of La Union where FARC placed a bomb in the centre targeting Colombian troops. It went off on the 19th Jan destroying all the houses in the village. FARC just told the villagers to run if they saw troops so no one was killed - but I doubt if the villagers gave any legitimacy to FARC's actions. Or what about the village of Dos Quebradas last month, where forty men identified by villagers as being from FARC, entered village homes, smashed telephones and killed 10 people before moving off. They killed seven more people in the nearby hamlets of Dinamarca and La Tupiada, resulting in an exodus of villagers to San Carlos. Or perhaps these people just gave permission to FARC to kill them? The stories of FARC abuses of human rights are endless and match those of the paramilitaries...

FARC atrocities are not equal

28.02.2003 11:04

To suggest that the FARC commit atrocities in scale and brutality to match the paramilitary and army is to absolutely deny the facts. The latest Human Rights Watch material indicates that the guerrillas are responsible the less than 20% of all HR violations, where as the army-paramilitary commit about 82% of all atrocities. There is enough fudging of statistics and facts in the media without these kinds of forums adding to the misinformation. Also for more info on the FARC’s legitimate role in a broad based liberation movement search for anything by James Petras, and check Colombia report at colombiareport.org.
