BBC asks "where have all the protest songs gone" - after banning Seize The Day from the listener awards

BBC article on the news website asks "Where have all the protest songs gone?"
and continues:
"Protest used to be about singing as much as marching. But as boy band Blue promise to record an anti-war song, why does the current movement lack a rallying anthem?"

Yet earlier this month Seize The Day, who were in the shortlist for the Radio 3 World music listners award were banned and falsely accused by Radio 3 of trying to rig the vote!
Electronic voting at the Radio 3 world music audience awards website for 'Seize the Day' was suspended the day before the voting closed, without telling the band. We now know why... They deemed them to be politicising the awards, calling the entry a 'political campaign' and cynically citing 'Voting irregularities' as the reason for pulling them out!

Thay claimed the band "spammed anti war email lists" - not true, They also suggest that some anti-war websites linked directly to Radio 3's voting page and that people voting for the band didn't know or care for their music - ?? Firstly - I don't think so..Would you bother to vote for someone whose music you didn't know? Secondly - to the bands knowledge no website linked directly to the voting page on radio 3.

So - double standards anyone?!?!

Yeah, lets make some £££££££££ and capitalise on the war, with heart-rending pop songs from manufactured boy bands.

Sing for the moment

24.02.2003 16:27

They say music can alter moods and talk to you
But can it load a gun for you and cock it too?
Well if it can, then the next time you assault a dude
Just tell the judge it was my fault, and i'll get sued
See what these kids do, is hear about us toting pistols
And they want to get one, cos they think the shit's cool
Not knowin' we're really just protectin' ourselves
We're entertainers, of course this shit's affecting our sales
You ignoramus. but music is reflection of self
We just explain it, and then we get our cheques in the mail
It's fucked up ain't it, how we can come from practically nothin'
To bein' able to have any fuckin' thing that we wanted
It's why we sing for these kids that don't have a thing
Except for a dream and a fucking rap magazine
Who post pinup pictures on their walls all day long
Idolise their favourite rappers and know all they songs
Or for anyone who's ever been through shit in they lives
So they sit and they cry at night, wishing they die
Till they throw on a rap record, and they sit and they vibe
We're nothing to you, but we're the fuckin' shit in their eyes
That's why we sieze the moment, and try to freeze it and own it
Squeeze it and hold it, 'cos we consider these minutes golden
And maybe they'll admit it when we're gone
Just let our spirits live on, through out lyrics that you hear in our songs
And we can

Wait a minute, Pete!

Have you HEARD any of this groups pieces? Do you know anything about them?

That's the whole point behind this particular flap. When "Seize the Day" performs before a BIG crowd that's more likely to ba at a demo than in a concert hall. You think they get paid for that? So naturally THEIR fans are on the lists used by people likely to attend demos or who spend time at web sites like this one.

Now of course the publicty of winning an award like this one would have meant something in terms of CD sales, etc. And they ARE professional musicians. But all of us who come out for the protests have a "day job". Or are you one of those nuts who think there's somebody picking up the tab for a whole bunch of "paid protestors".

Unfair criticism of the BBC

24.02.2003 18:41

The shady people in the BBC (vetted by MI5 and all...) were all down with fever day before so the whole competition thing appeared rigged (which is what the BBC is not into).

All those responsible at the BBC had fever.

YELLOW BELLY FEVER.

It is often caught by opportunistic bureaucrats fearful that anything frowned on (not permitted) by the establishment (people who decide for us) may affect their promotion and pension.

That's all fair enough, I suppose, except of course these dull fellas all want us to think they are creative and worse of all, independent.

Amazing, considering we all pay for these assholes through the extortion call the licence fee.
