Human Shields in Baghdad

Sjur CP | 28.02.2003 18:31

This was originally written for US citizens, but you can safely (at least most of the times) just read US as UK instead.

Just come back to Baghdad from Basra, where we visited the Dead Road, where American and British solidiers bombed Iraqi people who fled from Kuwait in 1991. For some days ago we visted Al Almiriya Shelter where 408 civilians died.

People in Iraq think America want to kill the iraqi populations, thats why much art has this as a theme. They picture US as a vampire etc. (England and Israel too). And it is really not strage.

To be here together with these hospital and nice people, knowing US etc. plan a war against them make me sick. If the reason for the war was to remove Saddam, I could understand it. They could have a solution and the iraqi future would look bright. If US realy would have done it to obtain freedom and democracy. But things are not like that.

This war US now want to start where not made by the US government but by a lobby, which first tried to sell the idea to Israel. This because the idea include to make Israel even stronger than it is to day. Even if the war also is about oil, control and power. The US economy is bad and they need oil. They are greedy, not the people of the US but a thiny part of the population, some few tenfolds.

Seeing the iraqi people and knowing that this war is about greed and not to make a better future for the iraqis makes my heart bleed. And if I can't stop it from here, I wil before or later do it somewhere else. We now has to stop the war mongerers and stand up against suppression in a untruthful and unjust world.

For some days ago we did a demonstration here in Baghdad, we had a 25 meter long banner which we put on a bridge over Tigris. The inscription was "Bush - The Whole World are Watching". To remain that no one can do this silently. One time wil come when people wil react, and that reaction is not going to be nice. When people finally wake up and find themself tricket by a small number of enourmously rich people.

On the 15th of February we were 2-3 hundred, the shields, who demonstrated, and the iraqis in Baghdad were 1.000.000. Tomorrow we wil have an international demonstration. Everyday we do all kinds of demonstrations and we try to get the media to write about what's going on. We need the world's attention. We need the media - so journalists: tell the world what's going on. Do your job - and do it good. Break the trend of bad journalism and disinformation.

We wil also try to put the Bush Administration before a international court, because they are all war criminals. All the time they break the international laws, but won't accept an international court. But even so, they talk about to prosecute the human shields who has arrived to Iraq to show solidarity with the iraqi civil population from the US, when they return back to the US. Europeans are tired of the arrogant US elite. Look at Germany and France.

We are human shields, many hundreds, and we ask you to help us through direct actions. In many countries in Europe we stop trains filled with weapon. They are not going to reach their goals. If we can't stop the war by diplomacy this and other types of actions is the only oppurtunity. And something has to be done now. Yesterday evening we heard sirenes and bombs not so far away. It was not nice sounds.

I am not here to fight, we are here to show our faces and in that way try to stop the US to attack. When the war comes we have lost. But hopefully is this a development in the fight against brutal capitalism, imperialism.

We think and hope that this is a step foreward in the right direction. In this way we don't fail. On the next place the US want to have a war we wil be many more and better organised. Just like when we demonstrate against WEF, IMF, WB, NATO etc. We have to stop the tanks and the New World Order.

I say this to the whole worlds population, not only to the people of the US.

The poeple of the US should stop working, stop to pay tax, stop the war machines, inform and communicate, make commitees and get yourself organised. This is a time to rise up and demand the righht to survive, not only for yourself, but for all the people and the planet. If you really like democracy and freedom, do not give it away to people who abuse it, and you. You pay the price for a war. Other people gain.

Soldiers - turn your back! You will suffer when and feel pain, not only because you realise what you have done, but also because the US don't care about it's own soldiers. Also in this war deploited uranium wil be used, even threthened with the use of nuclear bombs. You also have brothers and sisters, people who love you. Maybe you even have your own child. Think twice, you are not weak if you regrett allready now, turn your back, join your friends and family and demand the rights of your community, the rights we all deserve.

People around the world, people who joined the meetings of World Social Forum or People Global Action, people who farm the land, workers and intellectuals - rise up - now. Boycott the US, demonstrate or do hungerstrike outside the US embassies, or do other types of direct actions. Burn the US flag. It does not represent the people of the US, the "the fathers of the US Constitution" would have twisten themselves in their graves if they could. People of Africa, the money the US now use to make war is unjustfully taken away from you (and all citizens on this planet).

I don't want to die, but if I do, remember this:

I went as a human shield because I love the world I am living in and believe we all can live peacfully together in a just world and develop a sustainable society.

And I hope there are people out the, who think like me. I might survive, but other people die. I wil always remenber the ones who has fought for these ideals.
