Aberdeen is marching against the war

AAR | 09.03.2003 20:41 | Anti-militarism

The biggest march in Aberden for perhaps a decade...

The biggest march in Aberdeen for perhaps a decade took place on Saturday the 8th of March protesting the war on Iraq, and the persecution of the Palestinian people by the Israeli military state.

So, at 11:00am people began to assemble at Rubislaw Terrace, the march setting off at 12 noon. The march then proceeded down Union Street (Aberdeen's main shopping area), a sizeable number of people joining in as it made its way to the Castlegate - its final destination where some speeches were due to take place.

It wasn't only the fact that the march was big in numbers, but it was alive and active as well, meaning a big section of the march was chanting throughout: "George Bush - Terrorist! Tony Blair - Terrorist", "George Bush, CIA, how many kids have you killed today", "1, 2, 3, 4, we don't want your bloody war! 5, 6, 7, 8, we don't want your racist state!", "1, 2, 3, 4, we don't want your bloody war! 5, 6, 7, 8, organise and smash the state!", "we want peace!", and finally some chanting against Sharon and for the Intifada. We marched together with a section comprising mainly of people from the local Muslim community, holding a banner saying: "WAR IS THE HEALTH OF THE STATE - SMASH CAPITALISM".

As we reached the Castlegate most of the people left without listening to the various speakers who were mainly from parliamentary parties. Except from one Muslim speaker, the rest of the speakers (actually SSP, SNP, and Labour!?!) had magically found how to stop the war! Vote for their party!

We stayed, setting up an info table with various anarchist materials, which were taken very quickly.

Next Friday at 12 noon there ‘s gonna be a protest in front of the local army recruitment centre on Belmont St. Anyone who might be interested in travelling to Aberdeen for this, please get in touch.

Finally, the declaration "Libertarians against all wars!" signed by organisations and groups from across the world can be found here:
