Express to this government and its supporters what a
war really does, the suffering, pain and loss. We hope
groups and individuals will amass and demonstrate this
in city centres, air bases, oil, arms/financial
market offices etc, wherever visible. And that this
creativity is further expressed through street
theatre, image projection on public buildings,
adbusting, music, bloodied hands, air-raid sirens
shrines, wailing
women and "symbolic painting", to capture the
sentiment and creativity of the day.

The main foyer space of gypsy lane university was turned into a communication space
we set up a table on canteen side of foyer, went around the canteen with posters and an orange wig and informed people of the week. some posters were put up around the college (not enough yet)
at 1.30 george, from stop the war coalition, talked about "when war begins..." after this there was some open discussion.
All in all about 10- 15 people attended
Emails and text messages have been circulated, asking people to get involved, spread word, view and contribute to the virtual thread of this week at indymedia
the college paper said it will do an article and follow the events of the week as they progress. Stewart, the communications officer, tried to get us computer hook ups so as we can have a few computers hooked straight up to the thread on the indymedia website. Hopefully these will be up and running today or Wednesday
the school beside us, Cheney school, are having a strike on Thursday against the war, 4 of their students were at Sundays direct action at fairford airbase. We might be able to do something with them on Thursday lunchtime. I hope we can invite them in to participate.
Yesterday evening a board in the foyer space had student union stamped posters outlining our objectives and extra valuable information put on it. Today the board is still there but the posters are not, they will be put back up soon, during lunchtime
“Brookes Stop the War Coalition” has existed in Brookes since Sept.2001 so this is what we are called. There are hundreds of staff and students who have been involved in meetings and events and are on the contact list, so hopefully they will all be aware of this weeks activities and with that come and get involved in the lunchtime activities, as well as informing others in the university of what is going on
Thursday is still planned as the big day, we will have our 2 delegates reporting from the “people peace forum” in London, the quilt making and that night the main event: the open forum with guest speakers.
The following evening we are hoping to have more people lending their voices to oppose Andrew smith M.P. and from that getting involved with the other networks that are already active in oxford in opposing the war.

the table with the posters on it had not been touched,
announcements were made again in the foyer space and in the canteen
only a handful of people came to the stand at the start
later mat came along and it was decided to liven things up a bit, he was introduced as a tombstone seller of sorts, and he expected do be doing lots of business
a “bounce for peace” mechanism was made up, what looked deceptively simple and just a piece of card with “bounce for peace” written on it, was in fact hooked up by a complicated hi-tek system to the soldiers in the front line, so by bouncing on it that told them yet another person was against the war. That was a bit of fun but at least it broke the seriousness of what we were up to, some people played along. Along with this we were turning a normally controlled area into more of a “our area” by fun and inclusive means
a board was taken over and onto this a few posters put up, along with a plain one as a “feedback” system. No one contributed to it
a reporter from the college media came over to witness the goings on and she took a few photos

We got in at lunchtime and again the table and the board had been left alone.
We brought in a tv and video unit and put on “gandhi” the film, with a few posters around it. Mhari brought her sterio and played her “songs of freedom and rebellion” we brought in a few metres of white ribbon and safety pins and from that got busy making peace ribbons, the idea being that they might have a strong visible affect around the college. People started coming up a little bit, we got proper stop the war petitions. The board we made the previous day that hung above our stand had been taken away. We got a board and “war will start in 5 days- what will you do” was written in big bold visible lettering. We went around the canteen and surrounding areas informing people of peace week and Thursdays forum, while giving out flyers about it
Today was a busy day as some seminar or open day was on. There were a lot of parents in the foyer, some had a look, most avoided us.
33 people signed the petitions and many people put on peace ribbons
at 3.30 mike mc clusky, the site services manager came over and told us to turn off the music, as it was not allowed, he then came back and told us to take down our stand, as we had no permission for it. I asked him what we could and could not do. We closed up and went to mike newell, another management person and he told us we could not have space as that is policy.
That area is for the things management wants up. The day we inquired there were 4 stands up in the foyer; anti smoking, fair trade, and 2 others
Barclays often are there. We asked him how this is the case, the college does not want a clutter up foyer, full of different stands from diff college societies. Is this not a healthy sign of college communication and diversity? It appears not. Our foyer is part of the sales pitch of the business of brookes university.
The forum is arranged for tomorrow evening at 5.00 and there will be a gathering of sorts at lunchtime in the foyer
I had a discussion with one elderly gentleman who was telling me about how saddam has to go, I was informing him of worse evils in the world like the millions dying due to unfair social, economic systems and the rising network of people who are finding out about things and with that taking action

I mean the war is going to help the people of Iraq as once Saddam has gone they will be able to spend the money that they get from there oil and spend it on Health and Education. This is what the money is meant to be spent on now, but their leader thinks its better spent on Palaces for him and his family. For that reason alone he should not be aloud to lead the country.
Then there is the matter of protecting the innocent, everyone agrees that war is a dangrous thing, but so is living in Iraq under Saddams leadership. People shouldn't be publicly murdered or gassed because something hasn't gone the right war for the leader of the country.
Any person that is accountable for war crimes shouldnt be leading a country, he has had the opportunity to leave the country but he has said he wouldn't. There is no one else to blame for this situation other than him.
Therefore when war starts think about who you are marching for, if you want to save lives, stay in your lectures and places of work as this is the only option for peace.

The aim of the Coalition should be very simple: to stop the war currently declared by the United States and its allies against ‘terrorism’. We condemn the attacks on New York and we feel the greatest compassion for those who lost their life on 11th September. But any war will simply add to the numbers of innocent dead, cause untold suffering, political and economic instability on a global scale, increase racism and result in attacks on civil liberties. The aims of the campaign would be best expressed in the name Stop the War Coalition.

on the day of war the students and staff of oxford brookes university will gather outside the main entrance to gypsy lane at 1.00 in protest against the war
this will be followed by a teach-in outside the student union building, on the grass
this is an open invitation to anyone who wants to find out why the war is wrong and what you can do about it.
there will be discussions on direct action, the consequences of, and legal issues, what to do if arrested etc. also banners made and actions planned
then at 5.00 we will congregate on london road, outside, the uni, and make our way to the city centre for 6.00, for the city protest.
come along, bring ideas, friends, football, frisbie, musical instruments, camera etc
again, this is open to all, so bring your friends and also spread word.

Today - Friday 21st Meet at Carfax at 12.00 and 6.00 to protest against war
In Oxford, thousands of people converged on Carfax tower, holding a rally at 6pm before civil disobedience blocked three bridges. There were reports of police over-reaction to the sit downs. See pictures.
a few hundred gathered outside and took part in the rally outside brookes yesterday
there was a teach-in on the grass of the S.U
after this students and staff converged on the gyspy lane corner and headington road. Protestors came down from headington and the two groups merged. The protest moved out onto the street and succeeded in stopping all traffic going into town, despite some confrontation with police and their horses.
at carfax there was a rally at 6pm before civil disobedience blocked three bridges. There were reports of police over-reaction to the sit downs. Many brookes students converged at and participated in the protest on cowley road roundabout.
There were three arrests

it has been felt that there is still a gap between muslims and
non-muslims, invitations have been given to the islamic society
to co-operate in a united peace movement, to inform their
members of the peace activists and an open invitation to
participate in any way. but there is still only a very minimal
presence of this. fear and opression have been given as reasons
for this, but a united peace movement should get rid of these
and other rascist issues through solidarity, listening and
understanding
hopefully more muslims will participate this evening, please
inform others

we have been told that uni security and site services are pro war, when we asked them were they reponsible, they said no before a rant about "would sadam allow free speech in his country"

All the posters were put up around college for it were taken down, they were S.U stamped. This might have been done by site services, as it is rumoured they are pro-war but there is no proof of this
Uni breaks up today for the easter break.
It would be great if people keep involved and encourage others to do so also.
There are about 15 different anti war groups or networks working around oxford, linking up with them might be the most productive thing but we also can meet and organize events, whatever they might be.

Finally I would like to talk about the matter of how few Muslims have been involved in the number of Anti-war meetings held. Some I understand are afraid, this is due possibly to recieving abuse, or racial discrimination. Number one, any racial discrimination, particularly direct abuse of any sort is by law considered illegal. In essence it is alot easier in todays society to express your opinion, whether it is shared by the state or not, as muslims or those who are non-muslims, but come from Ethnic minorities, should understand that there would be no such thing as anti racial laws today, if our predeccesors had not protested against the segration of coloureds and whites. Mohammed Ali, the boxing champion, as an isolated individual opposed to fighting for America in Vietnam,which resulted in him being sent to prison, he had to pay a huge sum of money to the courts and state, and for what? Because he opposed an unjustifiable war. This is a man who fully understood the consequences of his actions, and at the end of the day he stood corrected. But in the now, as protestors we do not face imprisonement, protesting can be peaceful, there are laws which protect us as protestors, whether we are a united body or individuals.
If you agree with me then have your voices heard, speak out because as citizens of this country, who pay the taxes it is us that the government should listen to.

last Saturday, One overheard police estimate was up to 2000 protesters in Oxford demanding an end to this illegal and immoral war in Iraq. (
marched from menzil way to broad street, then there was speeches
after about 10 few people went to the plain, (the roundabout where cowley road, st clements and iffley road converge)
10 or more police came and removed them with threats of arrest.
they sat on the side of the road and had a peace camp with guitars, songs, etc
a few more people came and they went back onto the plain. white streamers were put on trees and lamp posts, peace banners were put up and songs were sung,
later a big peace flag arrived and people took it in turns to run around the roundabout, there were continuous revolutions for about 3 hours, it was fun, it did not piss people off, cars honked horns, strangers joined the group, strangers did a few revolutions with the flag. it was a lovely safe atmosphere. the police did pass by on a few occasions but did nothing
about 9.00 we left
2 shrines were left, nelson, a big teddy bear sat under the tree facing the cars coming form oxford, with a white peace poppy and 2 candles.
in the centre of the circle, where there had been a little house, 5 burning candles were left, and a small handmade cross with "the innocent" written on it.
the banners, a white boiler suit, and ribbons were left
it was very peaceful and traces were left.
that night nelson was stolen???
more people have contributed to this space, it is becoming a place for communication for the peace people of oxford

it is killing innocent civilians, it calls its actions "the war against terror" its response after sep 11th. CIA has said no link between iraq regime and al-quida. CIA also say iraq is not a threat
this war is about one thing- controlling and owning the oil.
also US led policies, along with other G8 nations. are responsible for up to 7,000,000 deaths every year due to its unhealthy and unfair economic systems, through IMF and WTO. this is the real war
millions worldwide are informing themselves. and with that taking action to oppose this evil empire.
we are fighting back by educating ourselves, choosing what to buy, upsetting unjust global economic mechanisms by non violent direct action.
if you doubt this, remember that feb 15th, was the largest organised protest in world history, up to 20 million worldwide

WORLD BANK BOYCOTT- feedback after event

last night we had an economist from senegal, demba dembele, talk to us about the world bank and its negative affects on africa and in particular senegal.
he was joined by a lady from india too.
basically WTO, IMF, world bank, pump money into "developing nations" knowing full well that it comes right back to the leading nations through debt.
a new global network has started up from some "developing nations" and grown into a very well worked out system BOYCOTT WORLD BANK, it tries to get groups to not support the world bank by not usings its BONDS.
already many city municipalities, universities and groups have signed up to this boycott, its modelled on the method which got rid of apartheid in south africa. cities in the united states which have signed up are

with very very short notice we managed to get about 20 people at the event. it was very well recieved
